Sussex

“Ælle and his 3 sons, Cymen and Wlencing and Cissa, came to the land of Britain with 3 ships at the place which is named Cymen’s shore, and there killed many Welsh and drove some to flight into the wood called Andred’sley.”
-Bede-

"I've seen war since is was a young boy, I've fought on every field known to my people.
Franks, Frisians, Jutes, Angles, Gauls and Romans alike.

All of them have toppled before our Saxon might, but our homelands
have soured soil from the bloods of our enemies.

Now, it is the Cymric dogs that resist, yet soon, this land shall be ours in time.
My beard might be white, but as Weyland the Smith before me,
I shall not rest until my work is done.
I shall be Bretwalda, as Wotan has foretold."
- King Ælle - Lord of Sussex -
The Southern Saxons are a people of war, having been displaced from their barren homelands by the pressure of enemy tribes, such as the Franks.
Ælle has been their king since he united feuding cheiftains, and many think that his leadership is the anvil where the Saxons can forge unity.

Technological Level

The Saxons are not as advanced as the Romano-Britons, leaving them with a disadvantage on a technical level.

Religion

In Sussex, most people follow the Old Faith, wearing hammers of Thunor around their neck. However, lately, many Suth Saxons have embraced the God of the Cross, leading to much discord among the Saxons here. Some blame the subjugated Britons, other blame weakness of the priests.

Foreign Relations

Sussex have remained at peace with the Kingdom of Kent, ever since their arrival. Old grudges die hard though.
The East Saxons are lead by an younger and more vital King, yet Ælle seems to have Essex firmly as a friend of his kingdom.
As for Wessex? The King have a desire to subjugate the upstart whelp, Cerdic, who is not even a Saxon.

Agriculture & Industry

The Weald of Sussex is an arable land of hills and downs, good for pasture but not fitting for large scale farming.
However, Sussex was also the source of much of the iron in southern Briton, something that seemed to have been greatly damaged by the Saxon invasion. In fact, the old bloomeries were torched as part of the initial invasion, much to the chagrin of those Saxons who knew little of smelting.
