Taliesinian

The people of the kingdom of Taliesin, these people are defined by their love of music, of the song and the dance. They have the magical gifts of the Marks, which gives them control over a single animal and metal or gemstone. Typically, they are the most powerful of the Namerians, though there are some exceptions.

Naming Traditions

Feminine names

Typically end in "a", but not an absolute rule. Most common: Victoria, Astarra, Lillian, Maya, Kayla.

Masculine names

Usually end in a hard sound. Most common: Daniel, David, Edmund, Ryan, Jason.

Unisex names

Rare, but similar to those we know. Most common: Jaimie, Jesse, Caleb, Roe, Kris.

Family names

Varied, similar to those we know as Celtic. Most common: Daelond, Thompson, Montgomery, Swavorski, Nualin.

Culture

Major language groups and dialects

Taliesinian is the major language, but some local differences appear in the far north and south. Southern regions often have blend of Taliesinian and Kennochan, particularly right on the border.

Culture and cultural heritage

Music is constant. Buskers are on every corner, and everyone knows at least one instrument. All children are taught to dance from a young age.

Tend to help others, all lovers of music, know to stay out of the way of the warriors

High levels of technology in collaboration with Cadman. Some chose not to use it, some do.

Common Etiquette rules

Never refuse a dance, it's polite to barter at a market, never interfere with a messenger or warrior on a mission, be friendly with the guards, never ask someone by the food tables to dance

Common Dress code

Cloaks are common, particularly in winter. Warriors have a uniform of dark leather, with swirling designs representing rank.

Art & Architecture

Grand statues in squares and courtyards. The palaces in Zavinia, Morgance, and Copperville. Many paintings, found in any of these locations. Broad tapestries depicting their history.

Common Customs, traditions and rituals

Daily markets in every major town, musicians on the streets, two major festivals each year. Parties are taken seriously.

Birth & Baptismal Rites

Particularly in noble families, children are presented to the family. Many noble children are brought to be raised in Zavinia or are presented to the queen at a young age. Common families present the child to the local noble family and receive well-wishes from them.

Coming of Age Rites

Those in warrior training become full warriors at either twelve or sixteen. Other children go out to seek jobs on their sixteenth birthday.

Funerary and Memorial customs

Sing the dead person into their grave. Have a wake afterwards where they honour the dead person by discussing their life, hearing speeches from friends and family. Nobles and war heroes are carried through the streets of their city to their funeral. Queens lie in state for seven days before being buried.

Common Taboos

Don't ever turn down a dance. Few take kindly to lying. Oath breaking is sacrilege, no matter how small the oath sworn is.
