Eastern Grass Squirrel

The Eastern Grass Squirrel is a tree-dwelling rodent species found in eastern Leland.

Basic Information

Genetics and Reproduction

Eastern Grass Squirrels generally mate once a year. Gestation is roughly four weeks with females giving birth to litters between two and eight offspring.

Growth Rate & Stages

Offspring are raised in nests in trees where the female is responsible for feeding and protecting them. After a month the young squirrels are able to leave the nest, following their mother for at least another month before going off on their own. Young that do not show an ability to use Power of Flora by the beginning of their second month of life are abandoned. Young are sexually mature by the end of their first year.

Ecology and Habitats

The Eastern Grass Squirrel is most commonly found in the prairies of central eastern Leland, but are found pretty much everywhere east of the Eldown and Aici  Rivers. They primarily live in trees, but venture into grasslands for food.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Eastern Grass Squirrels are ominvorous. Through the energy connections of the root systems in their habitats, squirrels are able to locate their food through Flora. Their primary source of food is nuts and seeds, often buried to be saved by winter, but by locating and eating insects affecting networks of plants, squirrels are able to protect their habitats from damage by pests.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Eastern Grass Squirrels are a social species. One "family" inhabits a tree, normally comprised of females and their offspring, then leaves the tree following mating season to find a new tree to inhabit. Males are territorial, as only one male mates with a tree of females, and can be aggressive toward other males.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Though they possess exceptional sense of sight, Eastern Grass Squirrels are most well known for the use of Power of Flora. The use of this enmanity allows for ease in finding food and hiding from predators. There have been documented cases of a large group of squirrels causing large trees to become covered in thorns in order to deter predators from attacking their nests.
