Eproilian Tales

Eproilian Tales is a fantasy franchise set in Eproilia, a fictional world known mainly for the unrestricted use of enmanities. The franchise began in 1238 with the publication of Polyraisa, a comic series about heroine Polyraisa (Jenifry Trelease), a woman who comes to possess all enmanities after contracting Regifted Syndrome as a child and seeks to stop criminals taking advantage of the lawlessness of Eproilia. Spin-off comic series, novels, and other forms of media would explore other places in Eproilia through the eyes of other heroes, allies, and antagonists.

History

Creation

Rye Potter was working as an artist for Red Bridge Publishing, a comic and graphic novel focused publishing house located in Vinato. The idea for Polyraisa was sparked by watching his daughters play a make-believe game where they pretended to have every enmanity by drinking different colored water. The concept of legendary heroes with such power were common among many ethnic groups of Leland, but they were often bestowed by deities who gave the hero a purpose for their power. Potter liked the idea of someone being seven-times gifted by some mundane mechanism. After some research he settled on Regifted Syndrome as his mechanism and the unassuming Jenifry Trelease as his heroine.    The first preliminary sketches of Jenifry and her hero counterpart Polyraisa were done by Potter in 1231. Her backstory as an orphan having been thrown out of her orphanage due to fear of her new powers bringing trouble followed soon after. Potter developed not only the character but the world in which she lived, a world where enmanities worked differently and society as a whole was far more lawless and chaotic. By 1235, Potter's creation had enough development that he felt confident in trying to share it with the world.

The Potter Years

Potter found success in pitching his series at Red Bridge Publishing and the first issue of Polyraisa was released in 1238. It was meant to be a single series focusing only on the character of Polyraisa, but with the popularity of the antagonistic duo made up of Goldenessa and Black Deva, Red Bridge saw potential for more titles within the same world. While Potter agreed that there were plenty of stories to be told in Eproilia, he was unsure of his ability produce work to his standard if he was also working on Polyraisa. Red Bridge agreed to increase the budget for what would be called the Eproilian Crew, and Potter brought on artists and writers whom he felt could carry on the spirit of his work. Boosted by Polyraisa's popularity, the first issue of Gold and Black was released in 1241 to great success and spin-offs involving Polyraisa's allies would soon follow, with Potter involved in every project in some way though his focus remained on Polyraisa.   Potter remained involved in the Eproilian Crew through the development of Huntress and Mockingbird and Withervine, both of which would see their first issues published after his death in 1250.

Hiatus

With the untimely death of Potter, the future of the franchise was called into question. Potter had been meticulous in crafting the narratives and the world of Eproilia itself, and his creative influences would be missed by the Eproilian Crew and fans alike, but the ensuing fight between the Crew and the publishing house over creative decisions and publishing rights brought the Eproilian Tales to a halt. Artists and writers walked out over what they were being pressured to make while the publishing house steam rolled those who remained to make something worth publishing. The projects garnered a toxic reputation, making it difficult to hire replacement staff. Enhancement, Vulture, and Saber would be the last and poorest performing series published with Red Bridge.   In 1255, Eliane Minck, Potter's eldest daughter, would purchase the rights to her father's intellectual property and create Seven Passions Publishing. She hired on many of her father's former team members to bring about what she hoped to be an Eproilian renaissance.

Seven Passions Publishing

Eproilian Tales would return to its roots with the publishing of Polyraisa: Collapse in 1256 and Gold and Black: Conviction in 1258. Critics and fans alike hailed the new series as a brilliant revival. A return to popularity would lead to the continuation of old series and the creation of new ones. With a publishing house almost entirely dedicated to the franchise, traditional novels set in Eproilia also began appearing on shelves, some starring favorite characters and others starring a completely new cast.

The World of Eproilia

A Caricature

The world of Eproilia is meant to be a caricature of the queendom period set in modern day. Imperants freely Command others, though few are in leadership roles due to the existence of talismans against Power of Persuasion which makes those with the ability to purchase or make these talismans very powerful. There is a constant power struggle within the halls of power, leading often to violence and the use of the lower classes as pawns.

Enmanities

The enmanities in Eproilia are the same as in the real world, at least by name. Eproilia's natural laws regarding the strength and abundance of these enmanities are what sets the world apart from the mundane. The most notable difference is the fact that the very first titular character of the franchise (Polyraisa) posseses all seven enmanities as a side effect of Regifted Syndrome, a feat unheard of in the real world where even those who contract the disease at most develop a very weak third enmanity, assuming they are already twice gifted.   Enmanities in Eproilia are also far stronger than in the real world. The ability to force uninhibited plant growth with the use of Power of Flora has only been demonstrated in very limited capacity, but some characters often use this technique for combat and other purposes. Aggregants are able to manipulate energy within special metals to create talismans that block the effects of Persuasion and Melody, something that aggregants in the real world have been aspiring to for thousands for years but have never accomplished.   Twice gifted are often portrayed as exceptionally powerful in both of their enmanities, and appear to be far more common in the world of Eproilia. An example of this is Black Deva, a recurring antagonist possessing both Power of Aura and Power of Flux. Black Deva is able to see auras with stark clarity, suggesting he is a strong visaurant, but he is also capable of commanding great power through spell circles, suggesting he is also a strong efflucist. In the real world, only one of his enmanities would be strong, the other fairly weak, but he possesses a strength in both that is unheard of even in those who only possess one enmanity.
