Translucent Whitewood

Commonly referred to as the ghost lantern tree, the translucent whitewood is a tree know for its large white seed pods that become translucent at the end of the summer, allowing the luminescent seeds to be seen.   Contrary to its name, the translucent whitewood is a dark wood tree with dark brown bark. It can reach heights of 75 feet or more and is known to live over two hundred years. Its dark green, pinnately compound leaves turn grey in the autumn, giving it a ghostly appearance. This is compounded by its luminescent seeds whose glow is visible once the seed pods become transparent at the end of the summer.
The seeds of the translucent whitewood are commonly ground up to be used as pigments in inks, dyes, and paints, but they are also edible and are used in a variety of novelty foods and dishes prepared for autumn holidays in northeast Leland where the trees are most common.   There are many legends involving translucent whitewood forests. They usually refer to such forests as being full of spirits ready to whisk away any who enter during a night lit by the 'ghost lanterns' hanging from the trees' branches.
