Le petit groupe pénètre dans la tour des Crètes Noires et découvrent qu'elle a été colonisée par les gobelins de la mine voisine. Il y croisent Dumpling, la cuisinière au service d'Etelka Herzen: elle sera tuée dans un des combats. Thulgrim sera également blessé gravement puisqu'il perdra un oeil. Après avoir capturé Gutbag, le chef gobelin, ils comprennent qu'Etelka a déjà quitté les lieux, en direction d'un lieu appelé les collines stériles.   The small group enters the Black Ridge Tower and discovers that it has been colonized by goblins from the nearby mine. There they meet Dumpling, the cook working for Etelka Herzen: she is killed in one of the battles. Thulgrim will also be seriously injured, losing an eye. After capturing Gutbag , the goblin chief, they realize that Etelka has already left the place, heading for a place called the barren hills.
