Hide-and-Seek

Biology and Behavior

A flash of black as something speeds past, and suddenly from behind comes a scratchy voice calling out "Hide....or..seek?".   Fae are all bound by strict laws, but even beyond this some have placed even further rules on themselves. It seems a puzzling thing, but laws grant power to the Fae. Their restrictions may leave them limited, but within their rules they are the ruler. They oversee the rule and can punish those who break them. You have to beat them at their own game.   The hide-and-seek is a prime example of this, Fae who were fascinated with a simple children's game that they didn't fully understand. Their version is quite a bit more vicious, but the rules are simple. If it hides, you must find it. If you hide, it will try to find you. Of course, the monster is far more suited to the game than normal people. Its hairy, pitch-black body is capable of folding up its lanky limbs to fit in cramped quarters to hide, and of reaching alarming speeds when necessary. And the malicious glee it feels when hunting down its opponents is so great that it shrugs off injuries and all attempts at stopping it, its claws flashing into action to “tag” its unlucky playmates. However, in addition to granting it strengths, its rules also permit certain weaknesses. While hiding, it voluntarily surrenders its ability to defend itself from attack, and before pursuing its quarry it always grants them a count of exactly ten seconds to hide, counting down in its uncanny voice. As it follows these rules it expects its playmates to do so too, which is a wise decision. What few stories remain tell that when one arrogant soul sought to break these rules, the scream could be heard for miles.
