Verio
(a.k.a. Truthsayer, The Timeless Librarian)
Portfolio
Verio is the Fragment of Truth and Knowledge, but also Secrets. He is part of the The First Five and as such one of the more well-known deities. Especially popular among scholars and researchers of arcane matters depictions of him can be found in many a library or research institute. He teaches that knowledge must be traded and shared, rather than risk it being lost. However, certain pieces of knowledge should only be traded to those who can be trusted to be responsible with it, and thus it must be kept within the trade. Sharing a secret with the uninitiated both lessens its power, and comes with a certain amount of risk. This idea is sometimes used as an excuse however to hoard knowledge and not share it with anyone outside of the faith, even if it could help them. Although rare, secretiveness has lead to selfishness among some of the Truthsayer's faithful.Worshipers
His priests consider the pursuit of knowledge a lofty goal that should be pursued above everything else. No stone left unturned, no mystery unsolved, all can be understood and thus all should be studied, that is their motto. Because their orders are rather secretive, any library or any old shop could be a temple to Verio. His clerics are often travelers, going from town to town, where they trade information. They trade with people of all professions, amassing knowledge on quite literally every subject. None know from where the trade comes, but all benefit. They often require books or scrolls as payment for services, and their temples are often so packed with scrolls and parchments as to be mistaken for libraries, if they weren't already. While knowledge is considered the ultimate good, the wrong knowledge in the wrong hands is a danger to all. As such, his Paladins aim to prevent dangerous knowledge from falling into the wrong hands. Whether it is a miner digging too deep, or an irresponsible Wizard stumbling upon knowledge he does not understand, it is their prerogative to prevent such events from causing a disaster. There are rumors of a secret order of mage-slayers, referred to in only whispers as the Burned Pages.Description
He is usually portrayed as a tall featureless man wearing intricate robes with a hood covering his face. In these depictions he often holds a staff in one hand and a book in another to represent knowledge.Divine Domains
