Ascension

Ceremony of imperial enthronement.

"It has been a long time since an emperor has sat on the throne but the empress, my mother, has done a greater job than anyone could have asked of her. She survived attempts on her life by those who sought to usurp power and made decisions with the best interests of the people at heart. I will live up to her legacy and continue to rule the nation with her guidance.   We live in a new era, one that my father could not have understood in the way that us of this age of exploration can. Bral will continue to thrive always and forever."
— Arslan Dodai, Excerpt from his Ascension Speech

Taking the Throne

The throne of the Bral Empire may never be empty and the ascension ceremony must take place the same cycle that the previous emperor passed away. Only two emperors have ascended in an unusual manner - not when the previous one died - the first emperor, Temur Dodai who was the only one who did not inherit the position, and the current emperor, Arslan Dodai who took over from his still living mother Enkhtuya Dodai.   The ceremony is a huge affair and requires many materials. The current head of the palace library reads the text from the original tome in which it is bound after the other staff have prepared the hall with decorations, torches, and the banners of the empire and the families of the imperial court. A great feast is also held for the small number of attendees and this event can last for seven days.

Always Ready

Since the grand ascension ceremony must take place at the time of a death, it can be very sudden. The staff responsible for the ceremony must always be ready. Some times are safer than others but whenever an emperor goes into battle or becomes ill, they gather all of the requisite staff and materials to perform the ceremony.

Spreading the Word

Ketzlat is the fastest way to send messages across Bral but they are only allowed to be ridden by the Skyknights who must be at the ceremony and swear their loyalty to the new emperor. So the news of the change travels slower, by horseback and by foot all the way out to the furthest corners of Bral. This is a prewritten message delivered and read to the people of every community and includes an image of the new emperor's likeness.
