Dog

Everyone's best friend.

"In Iyorii, we grew up surrounded by dogs. The little puppies were always my favourite. They all grew up so fast. We live and work together but we don't grow up together, not in the same way."
— Ahriin of the People of the Dog

The Origin of Dogs

There are many stories about the origins of everyone's favourite fluffy companion. The most common story is that when the Skyfarers gave up their life on the skies to settle on Breharan, the mounts that carried them along the winds - the winged wolves - gave up their wings to live on the sky continent with their two-legged counterparts.   The Orth - specifically the People of the Dog - believe that when one of their ancestors was lost and alone, Iia - the summer wind - sent them a dog to grant hope and lead them home. When they returned to their village, they beseeched Iia to allow everyone they knew to share the joy of a four-legged friend. The summer wind granted the wish and dogs have lived alongside the Orth ever since.   Scholars at Jamaira have tried to find the true origin of dogs. Their current theory is that they are domesticated wolves who became acclimated to people by eating food scraps that were left behind as people moved or left unattended in the outskirts of communities.

Loving Friends

Among all the animals that the people of Breharan keep as pets, none rival the dog in both showing empathy and evoking it within their owners. Something about the eyes, the movements, and the sounds that dogs make simply resonates deeply in both humans and avens.   A recent study from Jamaira shows that lizardfolk are not as likely to accurately interpret signals from a dog. There are no dogs on their home continent of Ratoghar which the scholars suggest that the ability to understand the animals is learned at a young age.
