Faerie's Bell

Stop, smell the flowers, and forget about time.

I have found a nice flower and secured some live samples. When we get home, I wish to plant them in my garden.

Where the Fae Roam

Faerie's bell is not native to Breharan and was first discovered on another skyisland by an explorer from Grara during an expedition. The destination was an untouched wilderness and the crew did have some encounters with fae who did not seem concerned about the presence of these outsiders.   The flowers were their defense. Taken by the beauty of the little white bells, the travelers took the flowers back to their home not yet knowing the properties - or the consequences - of the seemingly innocuous flower.

Taking Root

Most plants of the skies are adapted to send their pollen or seeds riding the wind across immense distances and the faerie's bell is no different. The reason the flower had not already found its way to Breharan was because none of the winds that blew over their island led to Breharan.   Now that they were brought there, they have become invasive and grow in many parts of Grara. There are some found in the Orthlands as well but the conditions are too harsh there for the plant to truly thrive. So far, it has not managed to make it past the mountains to Bral or the other regions of Breharan.

Where the Time Goes

The faerie's bell has an unusual effect on humans but does not have any effect on avens or lizardfolk. This is likely due to humans being the one species that has a particularly powerful internal clock and acute perception of time.   When a human breathes in too much pollen of the faerie's bell - or takes the refined version known as escape - they almost immediately begin to lose track of time. Sometimes they even forget they need to eat, drink, and sleep. This condition is known as faemind.   This is a dangerous thing to happen to a person but it is useful for some people who seek to ease the stress of their busy lives.

I really liked the description of the plant and its special effect! I'm currently GM-ing Shadowdark campaigns where time plays a prominent role. A plant like this could really turn things around!

I like that the flowers are the defense and that now that they've taken some home, the flowers are invasive. This will be interesting to see how it develops.
