Fluffy Dog's Tail

The pretty plant of potent spices.

It is truly a shame to have lived so much of our lives without this spice. Not that we eat a lot of it in Siirun, it all goes onto the ships bound for Grara. We tell outselves that it is worth far more to us in trade than it is in taste but sometimes I think we are lying to ourselves.

White Tufts and Spices Crushed

The fluffy dog's tail - or dogtail as it is more commonly called - is a plant not found on Breharan. It was discovered during a survey of the island that would later become home to the Graran colony of Siirun.   The plant grows quickly during the spring sending up grassy shoots. The plant grows taller by growing additional layers of the thin grass making a thick base that can support a height of up to a meter. In the summer the plant blooms in the big drooping white flowers that give it its name. When autumn comes, the flowers die off revealing the fruit of the plant, tiny little orbs at the base of the flowers. As winter comes and it gets colder, the plant dies off.   The fruit of the plant can be harvested, dried, and crushed, resulting in a medium strength spice that has become very popular in Grara. While first used for the flavor, it also seems to calm the stomach, aid in fighting off sickness, and help in the preservation of meats. All of this has increased the value tremendously and caused much wealth to flow into Siirun.

That Name Don't Fit

The name of the plant was given by a member of the ship that surveyed the island. While it made sense to them who came from a place with large dogs with big furry tails, the name didn't match the image some people had of a dog's tail.   Many people are from places where dogs are a rare sight or are accustomed to dogs with short fur or even stubby tails. To them, this is not a dog's tail.   Even worse, people don't really want to regularly consume an item called dog's tail, especially one with so much hair. While the people of Siirun continue to call it dogtail, it was given a different name for the distant markets of Grara - sirinspice.
