Siirun

The far county.

When you walk around the center of Siirun, you can feel the intention of the architects. The narrow streets, tall walls, and large spires restrict your view to only what's infront of you. The colony outgrew this design and outside the walls is the lively new part of town with open streets and open skies.
— Takalia, Travels in Grara, Vol. II

Born to Confederation

Unlike the other counties of Grara, Siirun did not exist before signing the Charter of Lands and Trade. Instead, it was created as a new county under confederation formally in 14EX. As a county it has the same ability of self-governance as the others as well as the same trading rights as the others. Much like in Furahnzata, this level of independance has acted to dissuade secession.   Siirun was established in order to harvest several resources on the island. Initially, it was intended to be a mining colony but the ore turned out to be far less abundant than it was initially reported. Fortunately, the second resource that was to be harvested became extremely lucrative. The spice produced from the dogtail - fully titled the fluffy dog's tail - has become very popular in Grara and in Zinato as a seasoning for both leafy and root vegetables as well as all different kinds of meats.

Where the Skyknights Roam

The Graran Directorate chose the location of Siirun not only for the resources that it contained but because of its position in the sky. Due to the then ongoing border conflicts with the Bral Empire under the leadership of then Emperor Bolkhar Dodai the Directorate sought to expand its borders beyond the edges of Breharan to create a buffer zone in the skies.   The entire colony was designed with defense in mind, should the Skyknights ever assault the island. The location of critical buildings, height of walls, sightlines of watchtowers, and even covered or underground walkways for access to certain places was meticulously planned before a single stone was laid. Even a second skyport was constructed outside of the city so that goods could be moved should the main one became damaged. This also meant that many soldiers and engineers from across Grara were assigned to the new colony.   All of the planning was crucial when the Emperor ordered a series of raids against Siirun. Multiple wings of Skyknights were assigned to disrupt the transfer of goods and commandeer as many skyships as they could - the Machine Priests had refused to make any skyships for the Bral Empire.   While the colony suffered great damage and loss of life from the attacks, the aggressors were repelled and failed to acquire any skyships. Only after more than three decades - and two Emperors - after the end of the campaign would the Empire be granted their first skyship.

A New Challenger

Many of the great trading houses of Grara were hoping to become the dominant economic force in Siirun. Whichever house managed to buy, transport back to Breharan, and sell the metal and spice would make a hefty profit.   Several trading houses were all ready to compete on the new island. Land had been purchased and resources allocated for the construction of their buildings. They opened up small stalls - the more grandiose structures were being built and time is money - expecting a flood of goods from the settlers who had already been there for quite some time. Not a single person sold them a single item.   While the companies were busy making blueprints for warehouses, calculating margins, and dreaming of profit, a lone traveling merchant had flown to Siirun with the first colonists. This man, Toron Bizi, came to know all of the inhabitants of the new town very well and established a little market for odds and ends that people had been willing to trade. When the big traders arrived, they learned that in a small place relationships are heavier than gold and loyalty is priceless.
"Some people say that I established Siirun Exports but that isn't true. We did. Everyone here decided what their labour and its fruits was worth."
— Toron Bizi
