Longhorn

Long wooden horns used to send messages across the mountains.

In a number of the small communities the most distant from the seat of imperial power, they send messages quickly across vast distances with a large wooden horn. The message can be repeated in each village to increase the range even further. While I don't understand the meaning of these calls, it is a method of communication which we may wish to pursue in the name of the Bral.

Far Across the Mountaintops

The longhorn is a musical tool created by the Mountainfolk. While the Mountainfolk may no longer exist in most parts of Breharan, their descendants carry on their culture in the outskirts of Bral. Among these traditions that they carry on, is the use of the longhorn to send messages across the hills and mountains to other villages or people who are out hunting.   The complexity of these messages can vary from a simple danger call to messages about deaths, births, marriages, and calls for aid. Records of the calls are limited because the tradition is passed on orally. There are no records of the making of the horn.   The horns are made of wood and oftern decorated with painted patterns. They are several meters long and the length and bore of the horns affect the pitch. Such variations in pitch do not affect the ability of any individual horn to communicate because all of the messages are based on the starting pitch or simply on the up and down motions of the melody.

Should You Listen?

With the ability to send many different messages, it is important to know what is a true communication and not a young person learning to play the horn. This led to a system in which every message starts with a low-high-low-high pattern which indicates it is not just someone teaching another or just playing with the horn.
