When we took shelter in a cave near the Passage when a storm came rolling in we realized that we were not the first to do so and that those who did before did so a long time ago. We found the remains of tools, writings on the walls, a pile of animal bones, and the remains of an ancient fire pit.— Ereti Vorsul, Letter to a Colleague
The People that Time Forgot
The Mountainfolk were a people that inhabited the
Alsarat Mountains during the
Time of Darkness. It is believed that they moved into the mountains to escape the rains and darkness of the lower parts of
Breharan that were consumed by the
Floor.
For unknown reasons, by the end of the
Time of Darkness there were no Mountainfolk left. All that remained were a few stories from the other peoples of
Breharan that survived the cold, wet, and dark era.
But That People Remembered
As archaeologists and scholars began to travel across their home, they discovered signs of a long-gone civilization near and on the
mountains. From these little bits of evidence they have reconstructed the lives of the Mountainfolk to the best of their ability. These scholars - not from the
Bral Empire - do not know about the descendants of the Mountainfolk who still live at the edges of the
empire.
These descendants possess some of the greatest mountaineering skills around and once they became a part of the
empire they taught those skills to the soldiers and the
Skyknights.

The Longhorn
In order to communicate with other groups of mountainfolk they had a system of horn signals which they played on three to four meter long wooden horns, known as
longhorns.
Archeologists stumbled upon - literally - a well preserved example of a
longhorns in a bog which led them to theorize about its purpose. On a different part of
Breharan, people in the outer regions of
Bral still utilize these
horns.
