The Aerie

Towering chronicle of history and imposing seat of power.

"It was an incredible sight. From the bottom of the valley up to the tops of the peaks the tower reached for the High. From it branched many walkways at all different heights stretching across the Vale."

The First Aerie

In the community of Astendoun located in Highpeak's Vale, there was a wooden tower built in the middle of the valley that reached much of the way up towards the peaks. It was in this building that many of the inhabitants of the mountain community lived, it was where decisions were made, and it was where their history was stored.   It was also used as shelter in the earlier times of the community when horned bears were both more common and more aggressive.

Burning and Reconstruction

Early in the Time of Rebuilding, a hot summer and some unfortunate sparks set the Aerie ablaze and it burnt almost to the ground. Fifteen lives were lost as were most of the records. Despite the tragedy, the community rallied and rebuilt the Aerie, eventually making it the tallest structure on all of Breharan.   The new tower spans the entire height of the valley and is capable of housing the entire population while providing room for leasure, instruction, meetings, and more. Making the structure even more imposing are the bridges that reach out from it to almost every part of the mountainside, allowing access to the different parts of the community without having to walk all the way around the rim of the mountains or down to the bottom and back up the other side.

The Aerie Burns

While wood is a good material for the construction of the Aerie it also has one critical weakness and one hot, dry, summer the Aerie caught fire. The actions of a few brave scribes and librarians - and the sacrifice of some of their feathers - saved a few of the important cultural and historic documents within the burning structure. Despite their bravery, saving the entire cultural heritage of Astendoun was simply never an option and most was lost in the burning.
For the first people of Astendoun, the Aerie was their home, shelter in a sheltered valley, far from the storms and the chaos.
