The Shade

Colossal crawling consuming cloud.

"The shade pursued our ancestors across the plains, over the rivers, and through the woods. We may have been faster than it but it didn't stop to sleep, not even once, but it certainly did eat. Many were lost and many were changed forever."

It That Crawled from the Storm

It is widely known that there are strange creatures which thrive in the darkness of the Void though little is known about them. Even less was known - at least less was recorded - during the Time of Darkness when a dark cloud climbed over the edge of Breharan. This cloud slowly traveled across the island enveloping animals, plants, and people whole, each one disappearing forever, and each time the Shade growing larger.   The creature took a particular interest in the ancestors of the Ostan people, following them across much of the cynosure coast region of Breharan - the regions now made up of Burim and Zinato - only losing them at the base of the mountains.

The End of the Beast?

After the Ostans escaped into Twinpeak's Passage, stories of the Shade fall from dozens to a mere handful told by the people of Zinato. Some say that its hunger was sated and it followed the rivers back to the island's edge and simply drifted off into the skies beyond or fell into the Floor.   One story says that the Machine Priests created a device that dispelled its darkness and that having its true form laid bare is why it fled from the skyisland. The organization refused to comment when folktale scholars inquired.

To Be of Shadow

The Ostan people tell stories of those who were touched but not consumed by the Shade. The shadetouched bear a variety of qualities on the affected parts of their bodies, scales, feathers, flowers, mushrooms, stones, and many more.   While these effects do not match up exactly with the usual stories of it, this is believed to be a unique type of faecurse.
Onward we marched as the seasons turned around us,
the writhing cloud of the Shade forever in tow.
And for a time our life was just thus,
pursued relentlessly by our foe.
