"The beast spread its wings and they reached as far as the eye could see. It shadowed the village and blocked the wind. It reached down with a long neck and opened a mouth made of teeth as tall as a person. With its first bite it ate the horses. With the second, the goats. And the last bite ate the people. It is just a story though. Of all the stories we tell, that one is the one we believe no part of."— Tasiir of the People of the Horse
A Beast of Legend
The beast of Haira is described as a creature as large as you can imagine, capable of eating entire villages in one bite. It flies on wings ten times longer than its body. Sometimes it is described as scaly and sometimes as feathered, sometimes with teeth, sometimes with a beak, but always as full of hate.
The Beast of the Real
I think it is possible that a group of the Orth did disappear. They were not killed by a beast but by the winter. Perhaps there were once ketzlat in this region and the beast is an exaggerated story of an encounter with one. Notably, no ketzlat have been recorded in the mountains that border the Orthlands on the Iiaward side. This is all my own speculation of course.— Takalia, A Life of Wind and Song
It gets its name from the region in which the story originated, the inhabited parts of the
Orthlands closest to
Haira's Land. There is no evidence that the beast ever existed or that any creature of that size has ever existed.
