Zongzhu

Zongzhu is the title given to the leaders of the Jiaopai, the cultivation sects.

Appointment

Although the meaning of the title implies that the position is hereditary (see sidebar), it very much depends on the makeup of the sect. For instance, both Baoyu Sect and Haonan Sect are merit-based leadership, rather than hereditary leadership. (While Wu Zibai might be a descendant of Wu Shenzhen, there have been leaders not from the Wu family, and there's no guarantee that he is in the first place.)

Duties and Responsibilities

The zongzhu is the leader of the sect he or she is in, and as such, has duties and responsibilities directly relating to that sect - and they are expected to fulfill those before those of any other roles they may hold, because the role of sects is so important.
  • They must see that disciples are recruited and trained.
  • They must know the measure of their disciples, and treat them appropriately, rewarding and punishing when necessary.
  • They must assign roles and responsibilities to those disciples they feel are best suited to them.
  • They must protect the common people within their territory, by approving Night-hunts for their disciples to take.
  • They must ensure that their disciples act in an upright, respectful manner.
