“I’m Lilja,” she said. “Who are you?”
As she spoke, her shoulders rose into view and Sean exhaled, happy to see that she wasn’t just a disembodied head on the sill. “Sean. What are you doing outside my window?” He paused to consider, then added, “I’m on the second floor. How did you even get up here?”
Lilja regarded him, then shifted to fold her arms on the window sill and rest her chin on them. “I’m flying. Hovering, really.”
Sean stared and he thought of all the times he had believed James or Colin or Dad when they had told him strange things were true. The cat was a wereman and turned into a human during the full moon. Nickles would sing if you spun them correctly. There was a European and American way to eat olives. “People can’t fly,” he finally said and snorted as he turned away. “You’ve got to be on a ladder.” Worry sprouted in his chest and he eyed her again. “Are you a robber?”
“I’m a vampire,” Lilja said, as if it was the most normal thing in the world to be. “Vampires aren’t people. They can fly.” She shrugged, her shoulders lifting to around her ears with an easy motion.
Vampires ate small children. They ate big children. They ate adults. Sean pulled the only immediate comfort to him that he could think of. “Vampires aren’t real.”

History
Lilja first visited Sean's windowsill when Sean was five years old. They became friends until Sean was old enough to show a romantic interest, at which point Lilja vanished from his life for several years. His senior year of high school. Lilja returned long enough to realize that she was in love with Sean, too. She fled again, but followed Sean to college as his protector until he figured out she was there. Their relationship blossomed from friendship to love after that.
