Thriyan Estate

Purpose

This estate houses the ruling noble family of Lockhinge. Since that ruling family has been the Thriyans for about as long as the city has been on the map, it has become colloqually known and understood to be the Thriyan's estate.   Not only does this building serve as a home and safe haven for members of the ruling family, the castle and its grounds house a number of important utilities for the city, such as court chambers, guest suites for visiting nobles, and a schoolhouse on the grounds.

Architecture & Geography

The castle itself is a large, imposing structure, made mostly of stone. Several stories tall, the main body of the building is an open C-shaped construction that supports several large towers on top of it, with the courtyard and gardens housed somewhat-privately in the middle. It is easily the largest building in all of Lockhinge, built on top of a prominent stone ridge at the tail-end of the Serpent's Rest mountain range. It overlooks both the sprawl of the City of Lockhinge to one side, and the ports and open ocean on the other side.   The estate itself extends outwards to encompass everything on this sloped ridge. Other establishments and amenities belonging to the Thriyans can be found on the grounds here.

Points of Interest

The Grounds

Areas that are outside of the castle structure itself.

The Gardens

Gorgeous gardens kept for the beautification of the grounds and the cultivation of a few native Greymantle plants for preservation. Some gardens are open to guests and staff of the estate, but there are a few private gardens that are reserved strictly for the Thriyans themselves. Ialai Thriyan enjoys gardening as a pastime, and has "claimed" several of these garden areas to manage as a hobby.   A notable landmark in the private gardens is the rainbowgonia tree, a large tree with beautiful multicolored leaves that Tekhetsio Thriyan planted after recieving the seed as a gift from the Spring Queen in the Feywild. While it has no obvious innate magical properties, wildlife seems very at-home on this tree and fey-sensitive people (such as Stargazer Dax) seem to sense that its connection to the Feywild is still strong.

Servants' Quarters

Only some of the staff of the Thriyan Estate live in the castle proper. A majority of them are housed on the grounds in a series of buildings built specifically for this purpose. There are a few homes for individuals, but most are larger, communal buildings to easily house groups and families together in one space. While working for the Thriyans is notoriously difficult, these well-maintained homes are one of the biggest perks of the job, given how difficult it is to find housing in other parts of the city.   Remmy Sullivan and Garrus Grey currently share one of the solo homes here on the grounds, which Tek often frequents.

Royal Stables

Where the Thriyans' personal Marsh Deer and Elk are kept. Most of these are riding deer, but a few of them are the Thriyan's personally-chosen deer for pulling carrages. Heather and Harold are two such deer that pull the Cart whenever the party goes on adventures in it.

The Castle

Everything inside the main building of the Thriyan Estate.

The Entrance Hall

A grand space covered in gold and recently-furnished with a gorgeous fountain topped with a magnificent statue of a crocodile. Flanking the space to both sides are two sets of stairs that lead to an overlooking balcony, beyond which the personal estates of the Thriyans and their guests are located.

Throne Room

In any other castle this room would be set up in such a way that a single person sits on their throne and holds court as the sole point of focus in the room; in Lockhinge, the nature of "court" is significantly different and this room has been set up with that in mind. While there is a prominent throne set slightly higher than the other chairs for the Lady Thriyan to sit, this circular room also includes a round table where many other seats are available, along with lots of low benches and sitting-pillows to the side for minor members and their attendants to sit. The layout gives the sense that everyone at the table are on equal footing and have just as much opportunity to participate as anyone else. The table is hollow in the middle, meaning that those wishing to take to "center stage" or otherwise hoping to speak to the court representatives may address each of them and be easily seen from this center point of the room.   The chamber itself is round, which mirrors the look of the table but also ensures that there are no dark corners for anyone to skulk about in. The walls of the room are adorned with huge hanging tapestries that depict important moments in history for the city, as well as figures of myth and legend from the area.

Towers

There is at least one rarely-used tower with a very romantic view of the city that Tek has taken Edmond to for a lovely dinner date when they were first getting to know one another. Tek then later took Ita Wyren up to this tower along with Edmond as a way to welcome her to the castle, and to help include her in the "secret" life that Edmond had been keeping from her for many months.   Some of these towers are used for important things or for housing people, but there is at least one tower that is strictly for storing cabinets and crates full of off-season decorations, priceless antique furniture, and gifts from other nobles that the Lady Thriyan doesn't actually like, but keeps just in case she needs to save face with them in the future.

Defenses

Physical defenses include the layout itself, as well as the well-trained Stormguard. Magical defenses are numberous; charms, wards, and alarms that go off if anyone enters the castle without permission. There are also a number of areas that are off-limits in certain situations due to how easily they can be spied on or sniped into by someone on the city-side of the estate.

Tourism

Once a year as part of the day of gluttony during the Monster Parade, the Thriyans host a huge banquet in their estate in which everyone in the city, regardless of their station, is welcome to visit the castle and partake of the feast for free. This is a favorite holiday for many people in the city, and it is a rare opportunity for someone of low status to meet (and potentially talk to) a member of the ruling family.
