The Great War
The Great War. Even today, tales of grand battles and epic victories are spun about the 4 great kingdoms of old waging war. Even among the longest living of creatures, few remain who've witnessed the events that have unfolded. Even have none who's natural life could sustain them until today. An entire generation of life, lost to legend.
Before the Great War, there were 4 kingdoms that constituted Loressea: the sea faring Island states of Ingul in the Modean Isles, the hardy peoples of Gothnhar, the zealous warriors of Misuma and the magical forests of Areya. These kingdoms were equal in power, existing in a perpetual stalemate for generations. Occasional wars between the 4 kingdoms were not uncommon, but resulted in only small victories.
The spark of war would come with the lands of Misuma would found a new religious movement, called the Eternal Night. This religion worshiped dark masters from beyond this world, pledging their loyalty for the promise of power. The ambitious ruler of Misuma would hear of this, and rather than quash the religion, he would take interest. The servants of the Eternal Night would soon gain political power in the Misumian empire, and soon they would tap into their dark magics to summon demons into this world to do their bidding. These demons exhibited great destructive power, and gave the Misumian empire the power to overcome the long stalemate and go on the offensive.
This started a chain reaction of events, and each kingdom brought forth there strongest weapons to fight in this cataclysmic war. For nearly a century, the fighting would continue, with each kingdom putting forth every resource they could muster towards the war. Tales of fabulous heroes and terrible foes would be writ, with one from each kingdom standing out over the rest. Donn of Ingul, a buccaneer turned admiral unmatched in naval stratagem, would lay claim to any who would dare engage his navy on the high seas. Goff of Doningothr, an axedwarf so strong that she could face a legion of demons and come out victorious, and would lead her allies to victory as an unbreakable wall of might. Purah of Misuma, a warrior skilled with any weapon and possessing an insatiable bloodlust, who harnessed his hatred for the demonic and took his kingdom back from the corrupt king who would side with the Eternal Night. Finally, there was Millea of Panda, an elf of unmatched beauty and capable of the grandest of magics, who would summon terrible storms to defeat any enemies who would dare attack her people.
The war would reach its highest point when the four heroes would face eachother in what would be later called The Great Duel. Without the great heroes' leadership, the fighting would continue unto mutual destruction for all 4 kingdoms. The nations would fall apart, and all that would be left is nations of ash. The 4 great heroes would never be seen or heard from again, and a terrible silence would fall over all of Loressea.
Over the next 1000 years, civilization would make a comeback. The 4 great nations are reduced to history, and nature would take over where the terrible battles were fought. Grand tales were passed down from those who survived, telling of the glorious heroes, and the terrible events. Old wive's tales and childrens' cautionary tales are still passed down to ward off bad behavior by threatening the Eternal Night and other events related to the war.
