Weave Warding
An economical replacement for naturally occuring stone capable of blocking or deflecting spells, weave warding incorporates thin layers of metal foil or patterns of wire into masory construction. While packed earth and wattle-and-daub constructions have been made utilizing weave warding, the technique requires much greater amounts of metal to work on wooden or woven structures.
The primary objective of weave warding is typically to block intrusive uses of divination, which can be stopped or interupted very effectively through its use. Only the most powerful casters or rituals are capable of penetrating the protection when properly deployed. Additionally the defensive barrier properties of weave warding interupt transmutation, conjuration, enchantment and other spell effects that aim to move, alter, or control a target obstructed by the materials.
Unlike naturally resistant masonry with a zone of effect greater in size than the blocks of stone themselves, a master smith with some skill in casting is needed to properly place weave warding. Interuptions in the barrier can make it porous and ineffective against some common threats when the necessary reinforcements to the warding are not included for common elements such as windows or doorways. Repairs to damaged structures with weave warding often leave vulnerabilities that can be exploited by intruders determined to locate them or possesing some knowledge of masonry or engineering to aid in spotting them. Having knowledge of, or properly interpreting, the original design of the weave warding is crucial for any repair work.
While the principles behind weave warding date back to before the Cataclysm, there is now a much greater diversity of materials capable of producing the effect than were availalbe to the ancient Ogres. The additional naturally resistant stone deposits with even stronger abilities are an entirely new discovery difficult to locate by most methods, and extracted primarily from deep Dwarven quarries.
