Ereldur

Government

The city is rulled by the Counsel of Nine, typically retired mages and Academia teachers. They are elected by a body of elders, themselves also typically retired Academia personel, upon the passing of a former elder. They make all key decisions and push legislation that is either submitted or approved by the city counsel (freely elected representatives of their districts). The Body of Elders is simply any citizen over the age of 68, most of whom are wizards, sorcerers or magi due to longevity magic users often enjoy. Peace is kept and enforced by constables and a token force of milita to watch the walls.

Defences

The city's location is its own defence as it is hard to reach. This is partially why it was spared by the Cataclysm, as it was saved from the blast and the hordes that followed society's collapse couldn't reach the city in force. If an invading force could reach the city anyways, its sprawling nature and disconnected layout would force attackers to take it in pieces and the bridges could be disconnected on a whim. The whole of the city's populace could possably be stored in the Acedmia for some time and the teleporters shut down. The city has many high towers that are used by the mages for astronomy but also double as lookouts. The city also boasts the biggest training ground for battlemages and a population of magic users.

Industry & Trade

Most of the civil services are done by magic, automatons or advanced old world tech. Trade is facilitated as it is the most common pass way through the mountain range that bisects the continent. Tourism is popular due to the exotic locale, scenic view, wonderous architecture, art and facilities, and the presence of the Academy. The Academia Arcana is most popular and prestigious school of magic in the known world, with many scholars visiting and prospective students vying for attendance. The alumni often join the city and put their talents towards bettering it.

Infrastructure

The city is built in the ruins of an old world city. It is composed of various districts strew across flattened parts of the mountain pass and the peaks around it. The districts are connected by bridges and tunnels both mundane and magical. There are also teleportation pads that are only trusted by the citizens there. The approach to the city is itself a small quest, as it is high in the muantain range that separate the continent and the trek covers narrow, winding goat trails, suspension bridges, laberynth like cave networks, ascending cliff faces, fording waterfalls and braving the thin air and snow near the top.

Assets

Many art, tomes, scrolls and relics of the old world were saved and stored in the city's library, which became the Academia Arcana. The Academia provides an industry of itself and tourism due to it being an exotic locale. It's also one of the few 'safe' trade routes across the mountains.

Guilds and Factions

The Academia Arcana has monopolized the city over time and they somewhat rule in tandem. Students and teachers often join the city after academic life and become leading citizens. The longevity of magic users often sees them dominate the Body of Elders, who then become part of the Councel of Nine and naturally secure the interests of the school and the school the city.

History

Ereldur was once a great city of the old world, possably a capital given the vastness and opulence of the ruins. Regardless, it was one of the few that survived the Cataclysm. Ereldur, a powerful mage who became the first of the Counsel and for whome the city became named, gathered relics and lore from the old world while it was still fresh in the minds and bunkered down the ruins of his city as it dwindled in the fallout. The great library would, over time, preserve the culture of the old world that would, also over time, become the mystical city of Ereldur. The counsel of elders ensured a wise and old rulling body, which instilled passivity and caution in the city, which became isolationist as the world recovered. Eventually, the Library became a school of magic as those from the old world expired. It grew in size and power until it became the Academy it is now, and from its halls came a class of scholars and mages that re entered the world. Word spread about the place of learning and old world knowledge, resulting in a flock of scholars making the arduous trek to the city to see the school. Its numbers grew, the facilities expanded, and successive classes of scholars and mages brought their learning back to the world, hastening its recovery and making an education industry in the city. Now noblemen seek to send their children to the school and scholars travel far and wide for things to bring to the museum. Its students often become leading citizens and are coveted around the world as court mages, teachers and adventurers. The city counsel only recently opened their metaphorical doors to settlement and tourism as the counsel and city become more cosmopolitan.

Geography

It is located high in the Mountain Ranges. Its districts are on top of leveled tops and connected with bridges, tunnels and teleporters. Magic provides most of the cities needs, such as water and basic foods. Most foodstuffs are traded for by local hunters and farmers on the lands opposite the Great Cataclysm, as it is a far easer route to traverse than the steep decline.
