What Makes the World Matter

Energy is the fundamental capability of matter to move or resist moving. In the context of Magic energy refers to Metaphysical energies that keeps matter in a worldly form & gives it its individual properties - otherwise known as information. Whether harnessing Magic or burning coal to power a steam engine, energy is expended to create work, changing form & producing an effect that is beneficial to the user, or harmful to their foes.

All Information is Energy

From Memories through to the physical information which governs the laws of the world, all forms of information contain some manner or form of energy that can be harnessed to produce an effect. Without this information, matter reverts to a form known as Pure Shape, and is swept away to The Veil where it may be molded & combined with more information and returned to a worldly plane.

Not All Energy is Equal

Similar to the material properties seen in worldly materials & their compounds, not all Energy is created equal. Originating from Pure Energies, most worldly energy is limited in its capabilities, capacities & informational complexity in order to protect the natural order. Ranging from Fundamental to Greater Arcane, energy throughout the world & greater planes of existence sit on a spectrum.
Greater Arcane energies are often a form of Pure Energy that can produce massive effect & catalyzes violently when brought into a worldly plane. For this reason, Arcane energies are exceptionally rare to find on a worldly plane - and when they are, are often manufactured into existence through great efforts.
Fundamental and similar Worldly energies are more stable & catalyze much more gently into a wordly plane, finding themselves seated at the epicenter of materials, living things & in the environment with less extreme effects.

Energies & Magic

All Magic harnesses energy - found either in a Source / fontis or summoned up from the wellspring of Willpower that surrounds a Soul. When stripped from matter & bared naked to the world, energy seeks to catalyse with the environment - forming its bonds with matter & other energies or merging its residual information with the worldly plane & expending itself before returning to The Veil.
This catalysis can take many different forms, and differs widely based on the form of energy that is exposed to the world:

• Thermal radiation
• Electromagnetic radiation
• Catalytic reactions with other energies
• Catalytic reactions with matter (and the energies contained therein)
• Interactions with time, space & The Veil.

These reactions, the natural laws of the world in which they take place - as well as the other energies in their surroundings - combine to create the practice of Magic - and establish the framework through which Kindred have observed the laws of the greater universe.

 

Never Created or Destroyed

Energy only ever changes form - when energy is completely expended on a worldly plane, it becomes Memories - the final form of energy, Memories soak into the world & will eventually reach equilibrium, becoming nigh undetectable except by the most powerful of Oracles. These Memories rest at such a low state of energy that they will always remember what they once were, and are nigh impervious to change.
Eventually, Memories will fade out of a worldly plane, floating free into The Veil until they may be Forgotten & fall to The Void.
