The Fledgeling Grand Courts are formed when the Rua'kiin, Dru'kiin & Var'kiin noble courts united in Bonds to found The Grand Courts of Tawdrii.
The Pre-Collapse timeline extends from the first age of Tawdrii up until its fall to the Veil following the Collapse.
The First Age of Tawdrii was a tumultuous and vicious time that marked the earliest period of recorded history on the world & the emergence from a dark age of forgotten knowledge & lawlessness by way of the fledgling Grand Courts of Tawdrii.
The Fledgeling Grand Courts are formed when the Rua'kiin, Dru'kiin & Var'kiin noble courts united in Bonds to found The Grand Courts of Tawdrii.
Together with the Ten'Tau & Kriss, the The Grand Courts declare a war of cleansing against all shards of The Drifters in The Heart of Tawdrii.
The Great Push is founded as a coalition force under the command of The Grand Courts. Uniting the fledgling courts & tribes from The Heart of Tawdrii & separatist Ten'Tau & Kriss from Drifter shards, The Great Push are driven by their Patrons to wage war against The Drifters in the hopes of uniting The Heart of Tawdrii.
The Secret Campaign was a campaign that saw the Order of Auditors & Ten'Tau driven into the Ash Forest in search of Ascendant knowledge to turn the tide of The Great Push.
The Battle of Six Points was a Legendary battle that raged between the Order of Auditors & The Prime Shard of The Drifters. Forced to attack a fortified position from six directions, The Auditors faced down an intense & unfaltering foe - shattering their Willpower & eventually unravelling the Council of Shards. Eradicating the Drifter shards that failed to retreat before their final advance, the Order of Auditors declared victory in the name of The Grand Courts.
The Duel of Black Peaks was a Legendary duel between the Illuminated Few, Cult of Loose Strands & The Court of Hallowed Fields that marked the end of The Great Cleansing.
Betrayed by the Dar'kiin families in The Heart of Tawdrii, tens of The Grand Courts most Influential were murdered in cold blood in an attempt to overthrow the Authority of the Courts. Mobilized against the uprising, the The Grand Courts called upon The Great Push one more time to cleanse their home of a traitorous foe. Over the course of two cycles & in the wake of monstrous atrocities on both sides, the Dar'kiin were driven to the brink of extinction, forced into hiding away from The Courts by fleeing their homes & territories.
The Gilded Reception was a victory reception & treaty signing hosted by The Grand Courts that sought unity for The Heart of Tawdrii, bringing together hundreds of tribes & noble families throughout the most significant territory of Tawdrii to sign an agreement that would give rise to an interconnected network of Counties throughout The Heart that forever changed the lives of its denizens.
The Valiant Proclaimation was an era-defining event which set in motion the events of the Second Age of Tawdrii. Driven for further unity across Tawdrii, The Grand Courts proclaim The Heart as the center of the world, and begin a process of Weaving their magics into the Influence that runs through it. In direct conflict with the proclamation, powerful courts in the west of Tawdrii move to put up walls, erecting massive fortifications from the earth itself and cutting off travel & merchantalism to & from The Heart of Tawdrii in addition to rapidly developing Ascendant Werks to combat the spread of their rival courts' Influence. This trade of political disagreements would eventually spark a shadow war between The Grand Courts & The Foundation that lead to their eventual conquest in the region.
The Contraction was a Legendary revolution that saw a multitude of smaller tribes within The Heart of Tawdrii united under the banner of the Braymouths. Supported by The Foundation & well-equipped for war, the Braymouths proved an incredibly capable challenger in their feud with The Grand Courts. Eventually outmaneuvered & outclassed by the battle-hardened Sentinels under the command of the Courts, the Braymouths were subject to summary execution for the crimes of their betrayal. In the wake of a hard-fought victory, The Grand Courts surrendered some of their Authority & established a multitude of social, economic & political reforms in answer to rising protests for more enfranchisement by their citizens & denizens.
Seeking the Patronage of a recently discovered Greater Arcane deity of Luminare, the Order of Auditors established a new Cult of Eternal Illumination that would earn their Favor and begin to unravel The Foundation from within. Wandering The Heart of Tawdrii, driven by a Premonition in search of Relics, the newly formed Cult swept through abandoned ruins, buried empires & The Veil itself to amass a collection which they would eventually trade with their newfound Patron in return for her Favor in their future campaign against the West.
Influenced by the Cult of Loose Strands, the Valdesi family, precursors to the Valmour, revolt against the governor of the city of Morea. In less than a day, the city's entire garrison was turned against the resident governor, defecting from The Foundation & Proclaiming its independence, this single act would act as the catalyst for the rest of the events which took place during the Second Age & the proceeding conquest of the West by The Grand Courts.
With support from the Cult of Loose Strands, the Valdesi family enlist separatist orders & Mercenaries to spark a campaign that would eventually lead to the unity of the western provinces of Tawdrii. Leveraging their family's wide-reaching Influence over the markets, currencies & merchantilism that drove The Foundation, their strategic use of economic & resource sanctions quickly dwindled the coffers of their foes, eventually leading to wide-reaching revolutions, separatism & betrayal. In the wake of the chaos caused by their efforts, the Valdesi and their allies swept out from their homelands, quickly annexing & uniting the disorganized Counties.
In the wake of their conquest over the western provinces, the Valdesi family & their allies agree to unite under a single banner to form a new government that would take charge in the wake of The Foundation's dissolution. With Brakia Valdesi at its head, the The Gilded Court went on to revolutionize the economic & mercantilist systems which drove life in the west.
In a bid to test the Ancient defences that had stood in separation of the West & The Heart, a small military expedition under the command of The Grand Courts set off towards the former territories of The Foundation. Encountering a minute & unnamed Mercenary force garrisoned in the mountainous valley known as Maw's Pass. Thinking victory against their foes assured, the ambitious force was lured into the gauntlet & found themselves surrounded and faced with impossible odds. After a full day of fierce fighting, the expedition was forced to surrender; marking the first of a chain of failures on the part of The Grand Courts to overcome The Broadhead.
Naming their Casus Belli against the Court of the Gilded, the The Grand Courts declare a campaign to pierce The Broadhead & bring the western provinces under their fold. Sending a force of half a million under the order of Order of Auditors to begin their conquest against the seventy one thousand which remained under the command of their foes - the campaign was expected to be a landslide victory. In an official statement, Brakia Valdesi openly challenged Court of the Gilded, stating that "No foreign invader will even set foot on western soil." A day following her proclamation, the first military units of The Grand Courts began their first expeditions against the defensive curtain separating them from their ultimate goal - complete annexation of the west.
Under the command of the Order of Auditors, a force of one hundred and thirteen thousand marched into The Broadhead to take the fortress city of Kra'tau. Met with a combined force mustered by the Court of the Gilded of only twelve thousand, a fierce assault of the fortress began. Breaking the first of the thirteen gates which defended the bridge-passage of the Star of the South, the forces of the The Grand Courts surged through the defences of Kra'tau with minimal effort - each time forcing the seemingly disorganized garrison back deeper into the fortress. Emerging into the fortress proper, the Auditors & their eager soldiers were met with six ashen cloaked strangers, and set out to arrest them as compatriots of the enemy. In a sudden & unprecedented turn-about of the siege, the gates of the fortress closed shut behind the invaders - trapping them inside. Emerging from the gilded halls of the fortress, the Auditors were caught off-guard by horrors thought long Extinct; beset on all sides & ensnared in an Ascendant trap laid by their foes, the Auditors called a hasty retreat from the fortress - only to find themselves lost in a maze of shifting walls, defying navigation. The first skirmish of the new war turned into a massacre for the Grand Order, comparable only to The Secret Campaign in terms of lost life - not a single soul escaping from the berth of Kra'tau.
The Battle at The Middling Sister was a Legendary conflict that erupted when an army numbering two hundred and thirteen thousand under the command of the Illuminated Few began their passage through The Broadhead to strike at the western provinces. In their expedition through the valley, the force was met with a smaller opposition, well garrisoned at the base of the mountain - setting up camp across the valley, the Few pondered on their strategy for two days before beginning their assault. Calling upon Ascendant magic, a storm of acid rain was called above the battlefield, scoring the flesh & armor of the Court of the Gilded's forces. Launching a fierce assault on the defending forces, the Illuminated acted as a vanguard - folding back the affected area of their storm with each push - waiting down the Willpower of their enemies with each surge. Thinking themselves outmatched, the Mercenary order which had been called to lead the defence of the Middling commanded a retreat. Forming a retreating line with their best at the forefront, the defeated Blades of the western provinces quickly mustered themselves and managed to pull back to safety with minimal losses. Forming camp in the ruins of the defence at the base of The Middling Sister, the victors began to celebrate their decisive triumph over the enemy - only to have their celebrations cut short. Shaken in the middle of the night by the earth & sky thundering around them, the Illuminated called their forces to muster for what was to come. Arranging themselves defensively around the camp, by the time that their leaders had unveiled the Relics hidden under their very feet, it was too late. In the midst of a hasty & chaotic retreat, the earth under the Sister began to turn in on itself, churning like a great mouth & revealing a massive serpent summoned from under the mountain proper. Forming a shield to defend their allies, the Illuminated faced down the mammoth, all while the very ground under them threatened to swallow them whole. Eventually, with the loss of several Illuminated, the retreat proved a costly but worthwhile effort - saving twenty one thousand of the army's Blades so that they might fight another day. Shattered & left without the support of their allies, The Grand Courts faced a sudden & shocking realisation; their greatest may not be great enough.
Outraged by the senseless bloodshed & loss of life on the front against the Court of the Gilded, a majority of the influential nobles throughout The Heart began to protest the further contest of warfare against their neighbors. Characterized as "A meat grinder for our people", the campaign to pierce The Broadhead was openly opposed by a number of significant political figures in The Grand Courts. Forced to reconsider their methods, the Courts came to an agreement to Proclaim a temporary cessation of hostilities & called back their remaining forces from the front. Arranging a round-table that summoned the greatest strategic minds through The Heart, the Courts began to Favour a Mercenary proxy-war with the west - and funnelled much of their wealth into the armament & training of an organized paramilitary force lead by the battle-hardened Order of the Black Rose.
Hidden among the west, the Cult of Eternal Illumination had taken advantage of the weakened garrisons throughout the heart of the province to complete a Lesser Arcane ritual which brought the presence of Cult of Loose Strands to the forefront of their awareness. Suddenly in full view of those who they held Authority over, Esko and his ilk became the new focus of both sides of the war - causing revolutions against their presence throughout the west & weakening their hold over the populace. Forced to flee from the territory for fear of further repurcussions, the Cult of Loose Strands migrated into The Broadhead & set up camp in the ruins of Kra'tau. With a Proclaimation from the Star of the South, the Cult of Loose Strands declared themselves an ally to the west, and set out to repair their reputation among the Court of the Gilded.
Lead by the Order of the Black Rose, a force of six thousand arrive at the gates of Kra'tau once more, to find themselves met by a single surviving Guardsman of the Order of Auditors camped at the entrance to the ruins of the fortress. Warned against entering & recounting the fate that had befallen his compatriots, despite the survivor's warnings, the army pushed onwards & across the bridge separating them from their objective. Emerging into the fortress & discovering the fate that had befallen the last, the Order of the Black Rose began setting up camp in the blood-painted halls of Kra'tau, assembling small but effective parties to begin expeditions into its depths. During one such expedition, a room filled with half-eaten corpses was discovered with a madman rambling incoherently in the corner of the room, a Notable discovery that would later decide the fate of their efforts at Kra'tau.
Reinforced by the resources of The Grand Courts, the Order of the Black Rose set out on an expedition into the western provinces of Tawdrii. Split into smaller parties, each lead by a powerful Blademaster, handpicked by the courts, they entered into the provinces under the identity of migrating Kindred among others seeking greater opportunities in the wake of The Broadhead cessation. Embedding themselves into the cities of the Court of the Gilded, the Order quickly set about constructing a series of Secretive networks in the hopes of stealing away the Authority of their foes. However, the Order failed to accurately determine the capabilities of their enemy - and quickly found their connections uprooted or turned against them. A number of skirmishes that ignited between separatists under the influence of the Order of the Black Rose brought immediate attention back to the conflict with The Grand Courts - and served as the spark to ignite a more intense nationalism & unity through the west. Now with the full support of the populace, Brakia Veldesi brought the entire province under a state of total war; rallying over three hundred thousand troops from the people to strike back at The Heart.
Met on the bridge of Kra'tau by a single ashen cloaked stranger in the wake of their survival in the tests of The Breach the shaken survivors were faced with uncertainty. Fully expecting yet another assault, the Order of the Black Rose rallied their troops to the gates, taking up a defensive fortification at the first gate of the Fortress - pointing their Blades toward the smiling stranger. "Well done." The entity's words wove their way through the senses of his audience, the vision of his painted smile lingering a while too long in their minds. Undeterred by the fear of yet another test, the Campaignist of the expedition into Kra'tau stood forward of the gates, marching to confer with the enemy. In the wake of their conversation & the disappearance of the stranger past the gates, into the depths of the fortress, a thundering collapse could be heard from the construct - rumbling & spreading from its depths. Forced to abandon Kra'tau as the bridge across the broad river crumbled - cascading Ancient stone pathways like a waterfall into the tumultuous waters below.
Rallied in the wake of The Spark, the army rallied from the west marched past The Middling Sister & emerged into The Heart as an unstoppable torrent. Unprepared for the sheer ferocity of their enemy, united in their hatred of their invaders, city after city, fortress by fortress, a wave of conquest forced The Grand Courts into retreat until the tide steadied. Called together for yet another round-table, the many counties of the Courts voiced their concerns & dwindling confidence in the system they had constructed. Faced with an existential threat, the Courts were forced to meet their enemy in full - mobilizing what remained of their military to take up the defence of their remaining territories; an act that would force the war into a bloody stalemate.
With hundreds of thousands dead on the front of the war, a recess was Proclaimed by both sides. Meeting at the base of The Middling Sister, Brakia Valdesi and the Campaignists of the The Grand Courts conferred over their respective positions - and agreed to an end of the stalemate. Exhausted after years of campaigning on the warfront, a compromise was found; the Court of the Gilded pulling their forces back to The Middling Sister - taking with them the prisoners of war, but surrendering the cities left in their wake. The first act of mutual respect between the belligerents, the recess at The Middling Sisters set the groundwork for the further diplomatic processes that would bring unity to the warring nations.
Enlisted by the Court of the Gilded, the Order of the Black Rose began the development of a magical pathogen that would settle itself into the Authority of the Court of the Gilded and spread through their people, sapping their Willpower & willingness to fight. Embedding an agent into each of the units stationed throughout The Broadhead, the affected fell victim to terrible throes of pain & nightmares that indiscriminately spread through the entire populace of the west. Incapable of identifying the source of the magics wracking their province, the Court of the Gilded turned to those they had exiled - summoning the Cult of Loose Strands into their cities in the hopes that they might unveil the mysteries that hid the source of their suffering from them. Taking up the mantle of clearing the Grand Courts' magic through the province, Esko Tensenuma and his cult performed a sweep through the entire military - quickly identifying those who stood apart from the strongly united. In an act of national anger, the agents of the Order of the Black Rose - as well as their compatriots - were subjected to the magic of their own creation prior to their execution & their corpses sent back to their masters to spread their ills.
Enraged by the actions of their foes, the western provinces resurged following the events of the Second Spark; waiting until the very magic which had kneecapped their Willpower spread through the lives of those responsible before striking out. Weakened by the machinations of their own making, The Grand Courts struggled to hold back the advancing forces of Court of the Gilded. Calling on the Cult of Eternal Illumination & Illuminated Few to once more take up the banner of defense - greatly outnumbered & outclassed by the massive capabilities of a province willing to wage total-war against their enemies. Fighting both the pathogen they had created & an impossible war, the people of the Heart turned to desperation & revolt, utterly crippling any Authority the Courts held over their province. With their nation in open revolt & entire Counties falling under annex or surrendering their territory to the Court of the Gilded, the few remaining counts united under the banner of the Grand Courts communed with their orders to decide upon a path forward.
Driven to the brink of Extinction by the unstoppable surge of war brought upon them by the Court of the Gilded, The Grand Courts command the Cult of Eternal Illumination & Order of Auditors to summon forth Luminare into the world. Pooling the last of their magical resources to perform a Ritual of Manifestation, they plead with the goddess for her favor in the war. Granted assistance by the greater arcane, the Grand Courts found themselves born again, presented with a collection of Premonitions that would lead them into a new age. Armed with new magics, a Fontis of Willpower & an incomperable capability for Insight & Unveiling - a new order was born from the greatest of the Cult of Eternal Illumination. Emerging from the capitol, the Order of the Illuminated set out to push back the invading forces of the Court of the Gilded - bringing with them Ascendant magics that would forever change the world.
In securing their province's stability & holding back the Court of the Gilded with the assistance of the newly founded Order of the Illuminated & an avatar of the goddess Luminare, the The Grand Courts sought to take back the land lost in the course of the war. Effortlessly evading the pitfalls set out by the Cult of Loose Strands, seventy three thousand troops fought an impossible war against two hundred thousand on countless fronts - each time forcing a retreat, outmaneuvering & outsmarting their foes; whittling down their strength & magic. Forced back to The Broadhead & fearing further incursion by their enemy, the Court of the Gilded sued for a cessation to the conflict - which was broadly refused by the Grand Courts. Declaring a campaign to eradicate the Court of the Gilded & the Cult of Loose Strands, the Order of the Illuminated lead an army of sixteen thousand of their best to breach the The Middling Sister & push into the west.
Pushed back to the edge of The Broadhead, the Court of the Gilded fought a hard-won defense to keep the Order of the Illuminated & their army at bay. A costly & protracted endeavor, the defense of the west quickly began to drain the coffers & willpower of the populace, exhausted after countless years of fighting with their neighbor. Faced with the possibility of their Extinct, the Court of the Gilded summoned the Cult of Loose Strands to confer over their remaining options. Settling on a bet-all battle to push the invading forces of Order of the Illuminated with the assistance of the entire Cult of Loose Strands, the remaining forces of the west gathered at the final frontier of The Broadhead to meet their foe in a Legendary conflict known as The Broadhead Shatter that would see both sides of the war crippled.
The Drifters collapse under infighting among the remaining shards, eventually leading to the extinction of many of their racial ethnicities & their eventual dissolution as a recognizable faction.
Exhausted from the protracted conflict between their nations, the Court of the Gilded & The Grand Courts call a meeting in Maw's Pass - the first place that blood was shed in what would become one of the greatest threats faced by both sides - an agreement was struck to unite both nations under a single banner. In what would become known as The Gilded Pact the western provinces were brought into the fold of the Courts - provided the guarantee of certain authority. Widely accepted as a reasonable end to nearly three hundred and fifty years of conflict, the populace of both nations found a way to set aside their past indiscretions & managed to rejoice in the newfound unity of their provinces.
The Eastward Expansion was a collection of expeditions that saw the The Grand Courts expand their sphere of influence further east of The Heart of Tawdrii, settling in new provinces & annexing new tribes of Kindred into the fold. Fueled by a revolutionized economic system driven by the Court of the Gilded, the Eastward Expansion saw the rest of the Courts' home province colonized & united under their banner.
Disdainful of the The Grand Courts for their authoritarian methods of governance & unquestionable Authority throughout the continent, a coalition of racial councils & courts rose up from within, upsetting the balance of power & demanding equal representation for all races in the courts. Mobilizing the Order of the Black Rose to put down the revolution with a cohort of seventeen thousand fresh recruits, the resulting conflict lasted two years & was primarily defined by the ebb and flow of support for either side. In the closing of the conflict, the revolutionaries which had fought in the war had their crimes against Kindred annulled by the courts - and had their wishes for representation recognized.
In a bid to strengthen their hold over the newly colonized & far-off provinces of the east, the Grand Commissioner of the The Grand Courts ordered the construction of a new capital that would dominate the landscape of the East & centralize power throughout the territory. Erected using newly developed arcane practices, the city that would later become the seat of power for the whole of Tawdrii was defined by towering spire-like buildings that put the rest of the dunes & mountains of the territory in their shadow.
Driven by unknown motives & reinforced by the Cult of Loose Strands, a collection of criminal triads which had begun to pop up among the territories of The Grand Courts secreted themselves into the halls of the The Old Annex & set alight a fire tinged with Mysterium that destroyed much of the collective knowledge of Kindred in a single night. Defended only by a handful of the Order of the Illuminated, a small collection of Silkfoots under the employ of the most Influential criminals throughout Tawdrii slipped past the guard of the Old Annex - commanding Rituals granted to them by the Cult of Loose Strands to set alight the Memories kept there, simultaneously destroying the worldly materials that played vessel to them & shrouding the ashes of their destruction in powerful Secrecy so that none might recover what had been lost.
Favored by the Cult of Loose Strands & supported by a variety of underhanded nobility throughout the The Grand Courts, an age of unprecedented criminal enterprise spread through The Heart of Tawdrii & its surrounding provinces. Enlisting the aid of the Court of the Gilded & the Illuminated Few, the Courts enlisted their knowledge of Secrecy & economics to repress the spread of crime that was laying down roots right under their feet. In the process of unravelling the Influence of the crime lords in their home territories, the involvement of Esko's cult became apparent mid-way through the process & further involved the Order of Auditors in a bid to force them from the continent entirely. Eventually pushed into hiding, the Cult of Loose Strands & their criminal allies found passage from the continent - setting off on an expedition to find a new home far beyond The Deep.
Following the path of the Cult of Loose Strands & uprooting the nobles which had supported them within Tawdrii, the The Grand Courts named an expedition to pursue the remnants of the cult across The Deep. Arranging a force of ninty three to set out in search of the routed, the first of the airships what would define their further conquest was constructed on the order of the Grand Commissioner of the Courts & launched to seek out the Courts' greatest remaining foe & discover territories beyond the reach of the continent.
The Rise of Unity was a pivotal politically-driven conquest initiated by The Grand Courts that would eventually spread to cover all Tawdrii. In the wake of this war, The Grand Courts emerged victorious, uniting all Tawdrii under their banner.
In the wake of the conquest of The Grand Courts, the final of the separatist noble families finally give in to the political & military pressure placed upon them, resulting in the final & ultimate unity of Tawdrii under the Grand Courts.
The Age of the Hollow was marked by the first conflicts the Kindred would face against the Hollow refugees of The Root World.
Fresh & prideful after what they perceived as their first war against a new world, The Grand Courts begin exploring the possibility of traversing The Veil between worlds. Driven by this promise of new glory on a world other than theirs, the greatest minds of Tawdrii bring in a New Age of Enlightenment that revolutionizes magic & technology.
Following the end of the Hollow invasion of Tawdrii, The Grand Courts pronounce the foundation of a new Order of the New World; their task - to explore The Veil for the opportunity of a new world.
Beginning with disappearances into The Veil & chaos that tore apart countrysides, the end of the world came about in an unprecedented magical calamity. Suddenly & unpredictably, The Void was upon Tawdrii. Forced to face either the inevitable or the eternal emptiness of the veil, some strong leaders rallied the remaining Kindred on a migration across The Veil between worlds in the hopes of setting down roots in a new world.
The final team to leave from Tawdrii, the Final Push was lead by the Order of Auditors & was under orders to hold the tide. Protecting the last refugees until they could transit into The Veil with the guidance of the remaining Auditors.
