Hegumenia Marfa (Heg*yoo*MEN*ia *MAR*fa)
The hegumenia is the Mother Superior of the St. Aleksandr convent in Aleksandrovka, and for all intents and purposes, the village elder (since the convent owns the surrounding land, as well as a fair number of peasants in village).
Marfa is an aged woman, in her late 30s or perhaps 40s. She is quite sickly, and has been blind for several years. Nevertheless, she considers herself blessed by the Lord, because as a child, she survived an illness that took all the members of her family. Precocious and driven, she became hegumenia at 18 years of age.
Marfa is a stickler for neatness, and when her eyes started fading, she assigned Sister Evdokia to ensure that all the nuns keep their habits clean. She also dislikes loud noise, and speaks little herself, having taken a vow of silence that she observes for all but one hour each day. When she does speak, it is usually in a low whisper. She does know letters, and those few who are able to read attest that her missives are quite polemical.
Marfa's mission is to maintain an orphanage at the convent, and she is quite dedicated to its children. She remains in contact with the children who have left to start their life, and tries to ensure that they remain on the path of Pravda.
