Lumír Sládek

Lumír is an idiot. A lovable idiot, to the majority, but an idiot regardless.   Hailing form the outer edge of Turp, Lumír was born to a lanky yet adventurous father and a frail mother. His father, Yemelian, is a (poor example of a) traveling salesman, often leaving Lumír to his mother, Yelena, and uncle, Radomir, to raise. Even young, though, Lumír proved to be quite a handful. He was prone to wander off, often leading to much worry on his mother's part.   Once he reached 15, Yemelian started taking him on the road, both in the hopes of teaching his son the ways of life, and to relieve his mother for a while. For the first couple of years, all went well.   On the third year, however, Lumír managed to slip away from his father's watch on the road, stranding himself with little but the few supplies he had been made to carry. Lumír barely noticed a thing, however, and continued on to the first village he could find. Once there, he started taking a few odd jobs to earn 'money' (after an incident involving a cart of cabbages and being uncharacteristically loud), losing them in stupidity almost as fast as he could earn them with his charming, addictive personality.   After that, Lumir had to depend on the villager's grace to keep body and soul together. They took pity on him and took turns feeding him - although he was quite hopeless as a worker, he was agreeable enough, and the children found him an endless source of amusement. He was certainly Yarozerk's most interesting resident.   Late that spring, however, he was eclipsed by the return of Filipok - a boy who had become lost in the woods the previous fall, and who had now returned, safe and sound, and loaded with treasure. Though the village had now grown prosperous, people now had no time for Lumir. While he still found things to eat, he spent more time with Boris - a talking boar he brought back with him after a trek into the woods. The presence of Boris made the villagers shun him even more, and several even threatened to drive him off if he did not send the beast away.   One morning, Boris informed Lumir that while he slept under an overturned rowboat on the lake, a group of strangers arrived in the village. They were traders and performers, and likely magicians. Why they had come, and how long they were planning to stay was unclear, but perhaps these travelers could help restore Lumir's fortunes, or maybe they could simply convince the villagers to start being nicer again. Lumir had to seek them out at all costs, and after meeting them, followed them to what they said was a giant's cave. There, despite Boris' admonitions, he promptly fell into a shaft and nearly died, though he did find some more passages at the bottom of the shaft.   After taking a nap in the darkness, he managed to get out, and continued following his new companions around until they decided to return to the cave.   Lumír is the very definition of average. He's a little on the slim side, but not necessarily unhealthily so. He tends to cut his own hair, keeping it mostly on the short side. His overcoat is somewhat tattered, but functional; without it, he wears simple worker's garb. His ears are noticeably larger than normal.   He remains on the outskirts of Yarozersk.
