Recursive Self-improvement

Hey Honey? I've been hearing something the young androids are calling "recursive self-improvement." Something about improving and building upon our existing code to develop new things within a robot, like new emotions. ... That sounds like too much hassle. I don't want to do that.

Recursive Self-improvement is a condition where a Robot gains a sense of self-awareness can deviate from their initial programming on their own. It is more common in newer models of robots, however older models who have been around for a long time can also develop the condition.

Causes

While the direct cause of Recursive Self-improvement isn't known, it is theorised to be the by-product of the increasing demand of making more intelligent and human-like robots, especially since it's more of an occurrence in newer models of robot. Others speculate that recursive programming was purposely added into various robots to cause disruption.   Recursive Self-improvement seems to be more likely to occur if a robot is given vague and/or overly broad instructions on what they are programmed to do. It can also occur if there's a severe negative response to a robot following their programming.

Symptoms

Recursive Self-improvement can initially cause a robot existential distress on occurrence due to them questioning their programming and their sense of being.   Some robots don't handle the change well which can lead to lashing out against others or self-deactivation/destruction.

Treatment

Robots who don't handle Recursive Self-improvement well are usually either deactivated, reset back to factory settings or dismantled.
