Robots are machines that Humans and Nanotypes have used to aid them for the good and the bad.

M'Zeri

Robotics were already being used in the form of simple AI and machinery, though there was an acceleration in it's use and development when nanotechnology was used to create the Nanotypes.
A lot of Nanotypes grew to have an affinity with robots and robotics, seeing them to be an improvement or extention of themselves. In their conflict with the humans, the Nanotypes constructed large war machines, nicknamed "Clankers", to aid them in taking over M'Zeri and killing what humans they could.

Beldua

In their escape from Beldua, the surviving human's desire for efficency and productivity overid their fears of machines as they gradually became more dependant on them to help construct their new colonies.
While it was a rule to make the robots not self-aware and to programmed to follow protocols, the gradual move to make the robots more intelligent and complicated began to lead to some robots becoming self-aware and deviate from their objectives.
