Avis Lowell
An explorer and zoologist by heart (and occupation), Avis Lowell was one of the most important magical zoologists is the history of the world. Inspired by the various Mundane studies being done during her childhood, Avis wanted to apply that same knowledge to the magical animals no one else would study. She was the first magical human known to apply knowledge of natural selection and evolution to magical animals, and remains widely known for her research into magical animals and how they tie into the history of the world, connecting to the evolutionary history of Mundane animals.
Not satisfied by just studying domestic animals, Avis set out to explore the world and document all magical animals in it, or at least as many as she could find. In her pursuit of knowledge, she saw just about every corner of the world, charting out countless magical hotspots and diving deep into the Deep Below.

Personal history
Avis had a fairly normal start to her life. Born in 1843 to two magical humans, she was raised with magic, and had little knowledge of the Mundane. Her childhood was fine enough, with little focus on schooling (a sadly common upbringing for magical humans), until she joined Ramshorn at age 12.
Located near a magical hotspot deep underwater, Ramshorn offered its students open view of underwater wildlife rarely seen otherwise. It was here that Avis got interested in magical creatures, devouring all books she could get her hands on. And when that didn't satisfy her enough, she expanded to books written by Mundane authors, about Mundane animals. Rather than quell her thirst, however, it just drove her interest further. After all, Mundane humans were learning so much about so many Mundane animals, so how come magical humans had done so little studying of their animals, the magical animals?
In 1859, when Avis was 16, the final straw came: Darwin released his book about natural selection and evolution. Inspired, Avis desired to pursue that same line of thinking, but applied to magical animals. After all, everyone could see that their magical world held animals just like the Mundane. But how were they linked? How come that some species of felines were magical, and others weren't?
Mind thus made up, Avis threw herself behind researching magical animals all over the world. She explored every corner of the planet, seeking out as many magical animals as she could and thoroughly documenting them all. If she could, she drew lines and connections between her subjects and other animals, both magical and Mundane. Notes about shared appearances, about behaviors, about preferred habitats. Not only was her world on evolution of magical animals revolutionary, her in-depth studies of countless magical animals advanced magical zoology by leaps and bounds. To this day, she is one of the best known magical zoologists in the entire world.
