Telchoi

The nomads living in the Telchos desert have a name for themselves -tel’cah'te. Roughly translated, it means "the living people". Despite the nomadic life and the constant problems of finding food, shelter and priceless water, the Telchoi nomads regard their homeland as a place of life. They look at the endless sand dunes and perceive a potential whereothers would only find an infertile desert. The Telchoi nomads call themselves Tel’cah'te with pride. It speaks to their perseverance, their desire to survive and the kindness they must possess in order to masterthe harsh environment.

Tel'cah'te was born out of necessity after a huge disaster in their past andthey embody both the pragmatism and nobility of the tribal society. However, this pride does not come from a sense of unity within thepeople itself. Whilst their society is very strict and thorough, it lacksequality or acceptance. In fact, there is a strong dividing line in Telchoiwhich is a central aspect of their culture. This split between men andwomen is so complete that many use a different word to describe thepeople - tel'cah'sah: the living mothers.

The women are undoubtedly the governing sex in Telcho's gynarki. It permeates the nomad society, from the highest governing level - TheCouncil of Thirty - that their main military forces consist of warrior women. Therefore, it may seem that the men do not have any major place in the nation's daily goals. At the same time, some of the Telchoi tribes give some weight to their husbands' expressed opinions and needs;this applies in particular to the tribes that have frequent trade contacts with other nations or have settled in new villages or in old ruins they have restored, such as Orstos-Ri, Telnast or Avan-Telcho's outskirts. However, there is never any doubt as to which sex it is that ultimately makes the decisions.
