Chillhollow Prairie
Chillhollow Prairie is a cold, wind-carved steppe located on Caudal E6. The wide expanse of Penrose fescue and gentle rolling hills delineates the boundaries of the Blackthorn Territory, home of the hardy Blackthorn Verdial culture.
Geography
Like all Dorsal-adjacent regions, Chillhollow Prairie's geophysical structure is defined more than circumvection forces, such as wind and water erosion, rather than its meager tectonic activity. Rolling hills are occasionally broken by deep chasms where water flowing down from the edge mountains have gouged deeply into the sedentary earth.
Climate
As with all Caudal-associated cubes, Caudal E is cooler than average. Thick packs of snow accumulate from late fall to early spring, partially melting during the summer months without ever fully disappearing from the mountaintops. This can make traversing into adjacent faces a dangerous proposition for those not acquainted with how to detect and avoid avalanches, and the scant roadways through the region require constant maintenance and clearing to remain functional.
On the prairie floor, the soil is dry but not overly so. Fescue, grains, and hardy root vegetables can be grown with proper care, but timing is key with regards to planting and harvesting so that frost doesn't destroy whole crops. The comparative dearth of tall terrain features brings the risk of high winds, including tornadoes. Hypothermia, especially from wind chill, is a lethal threat for almost half the year on Chillhollow Prairie, and this threat has had a profound effect on Blackthorn Verdial culture. Most Blackthorn structures are built partially underground, with thick walls to better resist the weather. However, one upside to these adverse conditions is that wind power - both direct use as mechanical driving force and to dynamos - is abundant and inexpensive.
