Kämpfergrund (campfuhgroond)

On a lonely, wind-swept hill at the very edge of town, over-looking the vast sea as it pummels the rocky coast beneath with waves, sits a hall. This hall is neither great in size, nor is it grand in splendor. It’s rough-hewn planks and simple thatch roof aren’t much to look at. A sign on the door reads in common, “Entry into this tomb is forbidden. It houses the remains of those who overcame the Kämpfergrund. True Champions.” Behind the hall sits a large sand arena, with stone seating all around. Intricate carvings of fierce warriors in the heat of battle adorn large white columns that rise into the air, marking the ring. Creatures of all type currently spar against one another; the sound of clanging iron being carried on the wind. A log driven vertically into the ground sits on a path, just next to the entrance of the arena. It reads, “ᚢᛁᚴᚱᛁᚦᛦ ᛏᛁᛚ ᚢᛅᛚᚼᛅᛚᛅᛦ (Vígríðr. Til Valhallar.)”   The Kämpfergrund is an ancient place. It is said the champion of Freyr, the original ruler of the city of Daufala, fought and won his final battle at that very spot. Once a week since that day, a fight has been held there. Now, in addition to holding the weekly city fights, the Kämpfergrund also acts as a training ground for the Drengr. It is also where they hold their initiation ritual.   Becoming a Drengr is a big deal in Ginnhavian society. The Ginnhavians prize martial prowress, and to them Drengr is the highest martial achievement someone can get. Drengr are a warrior elite class that share the same freedoms and privileges of the nobles, in addition to a monthly stipend from the state. Drengr are also given one weapon and armor set of their choice from the Alfar, the smiths of the War Gods. For these benefits, the Drengr are expected to keep folk safe from dangers that normal guards and warriors can’t handle. Failing to always uphold the ideals of a Drengr, honor, loyalty, and bravery, results in removal of the title and death sentence carried out by the other Drengr.
