Ishru
Race
Creatures from the Old Galaxy, they've had some divisions since their arrival and development in Markit. The Ishru were one of the few galactic forces that actually peered powers to the old Adamkin in the height of their rule, though they were fewer in number and never controlled anywhere near the number of stars as that old race. They had the admiration of their neighbors though and cooperated in many things.
In Markait however, they Ishru were not nearly so represented in the First Wave as their former neighbors. In some cases this became a source of resentment between them and their former allies. But perhaps this degree of alienation was what saved the majority of their populations during the Humbling

Civilization and Culture
Culture and Cultural Heritage
Young ishru are taught at least one martial form in their young years, with the expectation that by the time they reached their majority they will at least be proficient in it. Parents who are serious about this training will also train them with mock weapons resembling a polearm that used to be a sign of enforcer status to the master's and latter became a sign of victory after they cast their masters off.
History
The base Ishru from the Old Stars were very much a martial society, doing so in service to a group of powerful beings they called the Toppled Masters. There has been much knowledge lost to time and age concerning this knowledge but the story goes that the ishru were the master's enforcer class and kept the peace amongst their empire. This and their latter rebellion became the foundation of a warrior tradition, where any person over the age of five who haven't had a least a cursory martial art training is looked at as falling behind.

Author's Notes
Inspiration: Secretary Birds are an interesting breed of avian predators that kick their prey into submission, rather than swooping down on them from the sky like many other birds of prey. I very much liked this idea and extended it to a sentient avian humanoids with a strong martial tradition....maybe a little inspired by Aggretsuko's LITERAL secretary bird
