Session 33: To The Surface Report

General Summary

Kayaks in tow, the party makes for rowing upstream. The group Strength (Water Vehicles Check) yeilds 18, 18, 16, 22, 9, 6. With this, the party kayaks to the Pool without much difficulty.

Selina puts her kayak on the rack, while the rest of the party keeps the kayaks and puts them in Bags of Holding. Bubbles explains that the kayaks will be useful to keep the kayaks for above ground travel via the Silverstream. This explained, Seklyn removes his kayak from the rack and replaces it with an IOU note.

After seven hours of lonely climbing and awful caving, the party is in desparate need of rest - it is the late afternoon of the 3rd of Slaying. As they exit the cave, they find themselves overlooking the northwest of the Silverstand. Between them and the elven woods is a burned heap, at which is a small group of Order of Raan soldiers with three wagons.

The marching order is Seklyn, Mystan, Virion, Bubbles, Uk-thin, Ciaran. Under the overcast skies, Ciaran and his Piwfafi are free from danger.

Upon approaching the ruins, they meet Talon Izel Serrano, who is overseeing the investigation of a Jan Pana village destroyed by Faeryn and the Dybbuk.

The human Knight of Raan informs the party that they were investigating if the remaining food stores were contaminated. To their surprise, Detect Poison and Disease found no mass contamination, or at least nothing that would be unexpected given the state of disrepair - rather they had been burned to a crisp. More disturbingly, however, is the fact that there aren't any bodies at the site. Towns hit by just the Dybbuk do have some contaminated foodstores, and are drenched in blood and corpses. But this settlement - like seemingly all that Fishcod raided - was burned so thoroughly that not even a charred bone remains.

As the hour reaches late, Serrano offers to give the party a ride on one of her squadron's wagons; they're heading for the outskirts of Tip'-sokoo'-sagh Village within the Silverstand, where they can stay at the Treetop Tavern. They'll be returning to Burle in the morning; traveling by night isn't safe outside the Silverstand, and the troops could use a good rest rather than a night march. From there, they can travel to Burle and then Saltmarsh via the Silverstand.

They stay overnight and get into shenanigans, then make for kayaking down the Silverstand, shaving a day and a half off their travel time. Virion and Ciaran discuss Virion's family, and they run into five elven scouts. After learning that the travelers are with Sir Sylvenne, they are surprised but let them pass.

After 2.5 days of travel (now midday on the 6th of Slaying), the party comes upon T'kopechuck Village. There, Noohw’t-la-hash’ sidles up on another canoe and explains in Dwarvish to his brother (after making a dig about the "Emerald of Seaton" cover name) that the ritual in the Drowned Forest will be: they will host it the final day of the Green Corn Festival, right before Ringshadow reaches the region, on the 19th of Slaying.

After that, they come upon Burle - where Senior Talon Delmeriv Adrex and Castellan Kiara Shadowblade are waiting for them. Talon Delmeriv was alerted via Sending. After a briefing - and Uk-thin and Virion agreeing to a duel - Castellan Shadowbreaker pulls Sylvenne aside to discuss Dr. Jenaro Cauce and where he got that Sunblade, going into a rabbithole about shipping, Gellan Primewater, Mannistrad Copperlocks, Anders Solmor, and Lankus Kurrid.

As Virion leaft the building, Uk-thin scowled at them. "When, where, what weapons?"

Virion glared at them, "I select weapons, you select location. Fair?" He gave them no time to respond. "If so, I select edged weapons. The blade."

Uk-thin pointed to an area near the building "We'll meet here, then we'll walk into the woods where we can fight without damaging imperial property. Be here tomorrow at first light, Knife-ears."

"Look- I don't want to fight you, I really don't. But your constant meddling, insults, buffoonery and blame-shifting has forced my hand," Virion took a deep breath and released it with a sigh, "and so here we are..." He murmured, a tired and frustrated expression on his face. "I'll see you tomorrow. Make sure you bring your second. I'll bring the healer alongside my second."

Uk-thin pointed a finger at him "Look elf, I don't care what you want. You've mutilated me, turned me into a freak" they gestured towards their lightning scar "and murdered someone before my eyes!" they turned their head to the side "when my son is born, he will see his parent is a monster, sculpted and crafted by the handiwork of one Virion Sylvenne."

Virion raised his voice, nigh-on a shout, "I don't remember that day!" He seemed genuinely affected by this. "I'm sorry I hurt you, but the assault is nothing more than a blur in my mind. It's what happens to me sometimes, especially with-" he paused, finding the words, "things that are painful. Lots of blood was spilled that day, but I feel I was never meant to be a killer. Yet here I fucking am." He seemed to be losing control of his breathing for a moment and catched his breath as he slightly trembled. "I was a dancer. A performer. I-- I don't know.... I'm sorry. I'm sorry I hurt you. I mean it." He slowed his breathing, regaining a semblance of composure "That kind of wound can be fixed, that much I know. I can pay for it, but I doubt you'd accept such an offer from someone so beneath you..." he scoffs

Uk-Thin looked shocked for a moment, but then their continuance returned to a scowl "I don't care about that elf, you left a scar on me, you killed Cauce, hell, you even let Faeryn run escape and threaten our food supply for the winter, every problem that effects me has a straight line back to you!" Uk-thin jamed their finger into Virion's chest "you say you're not a killer? Look how many lives you've ruined. You're body count is in the hundreds, and rising"

"This work has made me a killer, despite me never wanting to. As I said, I was never meant to be one. But here I am, a killer. That we agree upon." Virion puted a finger to their chest, "You killed Cauce. Don't blame any of that shit on me. You awakened the shriekers, intentionally or not. You sent him down there in the first place while I was still planning on negotiating. You. Fucked. It. Up. And don't even start about Faeryn. How is that exclusively my fault when you were no witness to anything on that damned island or the voyage after? Did you just... assume that I let them go or some other utterly ridiculous nonsense? I'd certainly believe you constructing any imaginary conspiracies you want to be out against you. You just can't face that truth: that your actions have fucking consequences!"

Uk-Thin glared at Virion, balled their battle fist, and started to say something, but stoped, and turned away "I'll see you tomorrow, Knife-ears, best of luck, you'll need it."

"Remember to bring a blade." He pointedly looked down at the battle fist "Not that toy... See you tomorrow."
