Bura (Bur-a)

Large and bulky humanoids with boar-like features, the hot-tempered bura are often associated with violence and gluttony.

Basic Information

Growth Rate & Stages

A bura reaches adulthood at 11 years of age, once their tusks have fully grown in.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Bura are known for their extensive diets and incredible taste buds, and can consume almost anything. Rarely, a great craving comes over a bura that causes it hunger for new tastes. As this craving becomes more and more intense, the bura is often compelled to leave the tribe to search for newer tastes, descending into madness if its hunger is not contained.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Bura society is tribal in nature, with physical strength being paramount. The strongest female Bura leads the tribe, with younger ones often challenging them for their position. It is considered shameful for a female bura to have reached middle age without ever challenging the leader of the tribe for dominance. The constant conflict often keeps tribes from expanding too far (much to the relief of the non-bura tribes in the area). While rare, no rules prevent a male from declaring a challenge, and the few male leaders that have led tribes are spoken of in awed and fearful tones.

Facial characteristics

All bura grow large tusks out of their mouths. They use these tusks to aid them in combat, rending their preys flesh in brutal manners.

Average Intelligence

While often viewed as brutish and stupid, many bura are plenty intelligent, and simply don't care to apply themselves to matters other than hunting.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

The bura can see in low-light conditions, and have a strong sense of smell.

Civilization and Culture

Beauty Ideals

Battle scars are a sign of beauty to the bura, especially if those scars were received in a difficult or intense hunt.

Gender Ideals

Bura society is matriarchal, and thus females are the dominate force.

Courtship Ideals

In addition to fighting off potential rivials, a male bura is expected to go on a large-scale solo hunt and craft a great feast for his mate.

Average Technological Level

The bura don't rely much on technology, preferring to use their own brute force and tusks to attain their goals. The exception to this is when cooking is involved, as they have crafted many elaborate ovens and other cooking techniques to satisfy their pallets.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

Most buras speak Buran and Ixiwian Common, but can also be found speaking Astyr, Goblin, Ignan, Sylvan, Terran, Tyrhin or Ursan.

Common Etiquette Rules

To insult another's meal is considered rude, and a non-bura insulting a bura's cooking is likely to receive a fatal mauling.

Common Dress Code

Bura wear little in the way of clothing, often wearing tanned leather scraps from previous hunts until they wear out from use.

Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals

The bura place special value on hunting, and hunting makes up a majority of a bura's daily life. Each bura family crafts a trophy room where they display the trophies of previous hunts, and many tribes are not above hunting sapient races who wander into their territory.

Common Taboos

Failing to challenge the tribal leader at least once is a sign of weakness for a female bura, while failing to procure a mate brings shame upon a male bura.

Common Myths and Legends

Most bura worship Brici, the Huntmaster, who leads the Wild Hunt all over Ixuil hunting exotic game.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

The bura have few good relations with other races, as they are viewed as savage, filthy, brutes. However, many respect their physical prowess, and they are often referred to as “jungle orcs”. While distance keeps the bura and Orcs from interacting often, the battles are often legendary and each race has a competitive respect for each other. Despite most races destaine for the bura, it is well known that they have excellent taste in food, and are sometimes sought out as exotic, if somewhat temperamental, chefs for the wealthy. It is said that a bura can make even the foulest of meals taste like a well-cooked steak.

Language A bura begins play speaking Common (Ixiwian) and Buran. A bura with a high intelligence score can pick from any of the following languages: Astyr, Goblin, Ignan, Sylvan, Terran, Tyrhin or Ursan.

  • Materil: Buras are intrinsically tied to the Fire Materil, and must become Firedancers.
  • Low-light Vision: Buras can see twice as far as humans in low-light conditions.
  • Animal Minded A bura gains a +2 racial bonus to Handle Animal and wild empathy checks towards boar-like creatures. This bonus increases by 1 for every two hit dice the bura possesses beyond the 1st.
  • Ferocity: A bura that falls below 0 hit points but is not dead may continue to fight. If it does, it is staggered, and it loses 1 hit point each round. It still dies when its hit points reach a negative amount equal to its Constitution score.
  • Gore: A bura has a gore attack that deals 1d6 points of damage. This attack is a primary attack. The gore damage increases to 1d8 at 3rd level and 1d10 at 5th level.
  • Iron Stomach: A bura gets a +2 racial bonus on saving throws against ingested poisons or rotting foods, and against any effects that would cause it to be sickened or nauseated. 1/day, it can roll twice on a saving throw against one of those effects and take the better result.
  • Natural Armor: Starting at 2nd racial level, a bura gains a +1 natural armor bonus to its AC. This bonus increases by 1 at 4th racial level.
  • Powerful Strikes: At 2nd racial level, a bura gains Power Attack as a bonus feat. A bura who already possesses the Power Attack feat gains a +1 to attack and damage rolls when making a Power Attack.
  • Rage (Ex): Starting at 3rd racial level, 1/day, a bura can duplicate the affects of the rage spell on itself as a extraordinary ability, using its total hit dice as its caster level. For every five hit dice beyond the 3rd, the morale bonus to Strength and Constitution increases by 2, the Will bonus increases by 1, and the AC penalty increases by 2.
  • Impaling Gore: At 5th racial level, whenever a bura succeeds an attack with its gore attack against a creature of its size or smaller, the creature stuck must make a Reflex save (DC 10 + 1/2 hit dice + Strength modifier) or become impaled. If that attack was a critical hit, that creature receives no save. An impaled creature takes damage equal to the bura's gore damage dice when it starts its turn and cannot move away out of its square. The impaled creature may use a move action and attempt an opposed Strength check to free itself. The bura may pull out its tusks as an immediate action, dealing the impale damage to the target. While a bura has a creature impaled, it cannot use its gore attack.

Alternate Racial Traits
  • Cornered Fury: Some bura fight at their most intense when outnumbered. When they are reduced to half or fewer hit points and they have no conscious ally within 30 feet of it, they gain a +2 racial bonus on melee attack rolls and to its AC. This trait replaces the Ferocity trait.
  • Smellier: Some bura have smaller tusks, but have a much greater sense if smell. These bura gain the scent ability, but their gore attack only deals 1d4 points of damage instead of 1d6.
  • Swift and Sturdy: Some bura focus on swift and precise strikes. They gain Improved Initiative and Toughness as bonus feats at 1st racial level. This trait replaces the Ferocity trait.
