Dualox (Doo-ah-locks)

Strange creatures who resemble Humans in most ways, the dualox have two heads instead of one. While they share the same soul, each head has its own distinct personality; usually theses personalities are opposite to each other, causing the dualox to clash and argue constantly.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Unlike nearly every other race, a dualox has two heads instead of one. These heads are equally important to the dualox, a dualox that has one of its heads decapitated will remain alive but in an agonizing state, both physically and mentally, for about a minute before perishing.

Biological Traits

Rarely, a dualox will be born with two heads of two different genders. The dualox only inherits the other bodiliy features of one of its genders, although always on the more masculine side for a feminine body or a feminine build for a masculine body. This almost always leads to the head who matches the body more to becoming the more dominant head.

Genetics and Reproduction

Dualox reproduce in the same fashion most creatures do, and can even breed with humans, although many find the immense difference between the two heads personalities far to much to handle, and thus many dualox are left with only themselves for comfort.

Growth Rate & Stages

Dualoxs mature much more slowly than humans, as they need extra time for both of their brains to develop. They reach adulthood at around 22 years of age.

Ecology and Habitats

Due to their similarities to humans, Dualox strive best in an urban environment. However, many Dualox are shunned by human settlements for their unnatural looks and their constant arguing, and thus must operate on the fringes of society.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Dualox share their dietary needs with humans, but must eat almost twice as much food to survive, as their bodies are slightly larger and they must send energy two twice as many brains.

Biological Cycle

Dualox share most of their cycles with humans, but often will have their twin heads enjoy different seasons to each other, which is cause for more sources of endless arguments.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Due to their constant bickering, most Dualox are solitary creatures. Many are forced out of their homes due to arguments with their parents, and thus must learn to survive by themselves from an early age. Despite their infighting, a dualox views their heads with a bond that runs deeper than family, and loves them as a part of themselves.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Many dualox wind up in underground circus and freak shows put on by unscrupulous humans hoping to cash in on their strangeness and the revulsion many humans find towards them.

Facial characteristics

Since they have two heads, dualoxes have twice as many facial features. Most dualox inherit features from one of the heads of their parent, with the other head getting the features of the other parent, thus leading to some truly strange and hodgepodge looking creatures.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Just like humans, Dualoxes can be found all over the Nine Realms, but they have no ancestral home to call their own.

Average Intelligence

Dualox range greatly in intelligence; both heads are often very different. Many times, one head is more of a thinker than the other, with the other often more introspective or outgoing, but they always mirror each other. Due to the stigma many humans hold against them, many lack a proper education.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Unlike humans who they resemble, the dualox can see in the dark perfectly to a range of 60 feet. Many speculate that it is their additional eyes that allow them to processes and adapt to darkness better.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Each dualox head has their own name, with naming traditions often being similar to whatever human settlements that live nearby.

Beauty Ideals

While they never openly admit it to each other, each dualox head is extremally self conscious of its abnormal body, and thus are often very sensitive about their appearance.

Gender Ideals

Dualox usually share whatever gender ideals with their surrounding human counterparts, although the rare bi-gendered dualox often have a much more open minded ideals towards gender.

Courtship Ideals

Courtship among the dualox is extremely difficult, as they must find another who is compatible with both of their vastly different personalities. Usually, this means finding another dualox of an opposite gender with two heads of similar personalities to each of their exact personalities, a task which can border on impossible. Thus, many dualox are forced to court solely for continence, which often leads to harsh breakups and isolation for the dualox's children. While capable of mating with humans, few have the patience or the comfort for the twin heads and such parings always result in a human child.

Relationship Ideals

Each head of the dualox crave companionship outside of their own, but rarely achieve it, and thus turn to each other for their shared loneliness. Often, one head takes the lead early in life, tending to dominate more in their actions, but even through all their fighting a dualox knowns that no one is close to them than their other half.

Average Technological Level

Dualox share most technological advancements with nearby human tribes, but are rarely allowed to reap most of the benefits of new technologies due to their societal standings.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

The dualox are capable of speaking many languages, however each language is "stored" in a different head. While each head can speak Common and Undercommon fluently, any other languages are picked up by separate heads. The heads view this as a blessing, as it allows them a thing that is truly their own and grants them conversation that their partner cannot interrupt in.

Common Etiquette Rules

A dualox heads are fiercely protective of each other, (after all, the only one able to make fun of them is them). The quickest way to unify two spatting dualox is to insult one of their heads; doing so often always causes both of them to turn on their new aggressor.

Common Dress Code

Dualoxes love hats (although their heads are constantly fighting over who should get which hat). They often have to get clothing specially tailored to fit them, which is often expensive and contributes to many dualoxes financial struggles.

Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals

It is very common for a dualox to attempt to play chess against each other; an act which is considered and bonding experience, despite the fact that it is impossible for one head to get the upper hand due to their psychic connection.

Common Taboos

Hoarding things for one head is considered self-harm among the dualox, akin to depriving yourself of food. Even the most selfish of heads knows the value of sharing and will at times let their other half take control of a situation.

Common Myths and Legends

The dualox worships the twin deities, Shi & Ihs. It is believed that after the Titan Menoti attempted to violate the demigod Eve, she later gave birth to a stillborn baby. Further devestated by the baby never having a change to live life, Eve prayed to Death, who intervened, splitting the soul of the baby in twain so that it may live, creating the first Dualox, Shi; who represents the act of birth and new life; and Ish who represents the last breath and the transition to Death. Due to their large frame and similarities to the ettin giants, some believe that the twins have to much of Menoti in them, and that the Twins and the dualox as a whole are on the side of the Titans and are plotting against mortal life.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Many races find the dualox disturbing and unnerving, and thus often avoid them. Even those with a morbid curiosity are soon exasperated with the twin heads constantly fighting, and will often abandon them when it is most convenient to do so. Halflings often get along the best with a dualox, as their twin heads easily feeds a halflings love of being social. Other races that often face persecution, such as Bekuma, Half-Orcs, and Kahaligites also find rapport with the dualox much easier.

Mentally, dualoxes are varied; each head is different from each other, one might to be smart, while the other dumb, or one might be impulsive while the other is charismatic. These dualities cancel each other out, leaving the overall mental statistics of the Dualox unchanged.

Speed A dualox has a movement speed of 30 feet
Language A Dualoxs starts play speaking Common and Undercommon. A Dualox with a high Intelligence score can pick from the following sets of languages (A dualox always learns languages in sets of two Aquan and Ignan, Auran and Terran, Celestial and Infernal, Celestial and Abyssal, or Aklo and Sylvan.

  • Materil: Dualoxs are tied to any one Materil (usually the Materil of their birth realm)
  • Darkvison: Dualox can see perfectly in the dark up to 60 feet.
  • Dual Linguist: Dualox gain a +4 racial bonus on Linguistics checks, and they learn an additional language each time they put a rank in the Linguistics skill. A dualox splits its languages between its two heads, each head understanding and speaking half of their known languages.
  • Twin Heads: A Dualox's two heads allows it to wear two different items in their Head, Headband, and Neck slots. However, this doesn't allow the Dualox to benefit from items that give similar bonuses, due to them still sharing the rest of their body and soul. For example, a Dualox would gain no benefit from wearing two headbands that both give an enhancement bonus to one of their attributes, even if the headbands are applying to different bonuses, but they could wear a headband that gives an enhancement bonus to one attribute on one head and a headband that gives a sacred or profane bonus to another attribute on the other head. Due to their multiple heads and increased shoulder size, a dualox must get most Body, Chest, and Shoulders items specially made to fit them, doubling the costs of those items. A dualox must also get most armor specially made for them, but since they only need the torso part of their armor modified, the armor usually only costs 1.5 times as much.
  • Twin Personalities: Although they share one soul and body, a Dualox has two distinct personalities; one for each head, each with its own alignment. Such alignments are diametrically opposed to each other, although the heads still view each other as closer than family and will never act to harm the other. Having two alignments does not prevent a dualox from taking a class or feat with an alignment restriction as long as one head meets such restrictions and the dualox meets all other prerequisites for that class or feat. Whenever the dualox is presented with a choice that the two heads disagree strongly on, such as a choice that could could heavily impact their alignment, they cannot take actions for 1 round, as the two heads bicker and fight for control over their body. They must make two Will saves, one for each head. Whichever head rolls the highest is the head who takes control and determines what action they take, although it may still be persuaded by other creatures into following the idea presented by its other head, and a head will never take actions that are obviously suicidal, such as choosing to attack a guard instead of negotiate with it when they are at a disadvantage, even if such action would normally be within its alignment. Whenever a dualox is targeted with an effect based of one of its alignments (including a spell to reveal its alignment), there is a 50% chance that the effect targets the other head, causing that effect to lessen or potentially even fail based on that heads alignment.
  • Dual Fighter: Starting at 2nd racial level, a Dualox learns to have its heads control its body in tandem with each other. They gain Two-Weapon Fighting as a bonus feat. If they already had Two-Weapon Fighting, they instead gain Two-Weapon Defense.
  • Perceptive: Starting at 3rd racial level, a dualox has mastered seeing things from all sides. They gain Alertness as a bonus feat and can take an additional attack of Opportunity each round. If the dualox has the Combat Reflex feat, they can take another additional attack of opportunity each round.
  • Twin Mastery: At 4th racial level, a dualox reduces all penalties for fighting with two weapons by 1, and can always take any Feat that requires Two-Weapon Fighting as a prerequisites without meeting non-feat prerequisites.
  • All-Around Vision: At 5th racial level, a dualox gains All-Around Vision, meaning they can no longer be flanked.

Alternate Racial Traits
  • Dual-Materil: Sometimes, each head of a Dualox is tied to a different Materil. These dualox are tied to two different Materil at once, allowing for both Materil bonuses. This extra tether puts more strain on their bodies, and such Dualox take a -2 penalty to their Constitution instead of a +2. This trait alters the Dualoxes starting ability scores and Materils.
  • Tandem: Some rare dualox are more in-sync with each other. Such dualox have alignments within 1 step of each other, meaning that they bicker far less often, but are more susceptible to alignment-based effects. They roll twice and take the lower roll on all effects based on their alignments, and can never hide their alignment with spells such as undetectable alignment. This trait alters the Twin Personalities traits.
  • Twin-Gendered: Rarely, a dualox is born with a different set of genders for its heads. In addition to the 50% chance to be unaffected by alignment effects, such dualox also have a 50% chance to be unaffected by gender or attraction-based effects, such as the unnatural lust spell, due to that effect targeting the wrong gendered head. These dualox bicker much more intensely then others, and must spend two rounds bickering instead of the normal one. This trait alters the Twin Personalities trait.
  • Varied: Some dualox particular mentalities don't cancel each other out, but causes them to struggle in specific areas. Such dualox gain a +2 to two Constitution, a +2 to two mental ability scores of their choice, and a -4 to the mental ability score not chosen. This trait alters the dualoxes ability scores.
