The Broken Throne
The barony without a baron, the realm of the broken throne is nominally ruled by the enigmatic figure of The Uncrowned King. However, as the name implies the uncrowned king is no noble, and makes no claim to any mandate to rule. If anything, the king seems content to sit within his stronghold in Darkhallow, as he's not been publicly seen in decades. Instead, a council of merchants, civic leaders and millitary commanders make most of the decisions. Decisions that usually amount to keeping the peace, protecting the eastern border with Vrox, and slowly expand eastwards.
History
Until around fifty years ago, the lands surrounding Darkhallow were in dire straits. The baron of Darkhallow had died without leaving an heir in 148AH, plunging the city into uncertainty. A council of lesser noblemen took over the government, enacting oppressive new laws that angered many citizens.
Things came to a head with the failed invasion attempt from Vrox, although the vroxian army never made it to the city, the subsequent weeks saw damning revelations coming to light. A group of adventurers revealed a plot by the council to hand the city over to Vrox without a fight, for which they'd been promised great rewards by the Vroxian grand general. The scandal caused a widespread revolt by the populace, seeing the council hanged and their families exiled from the city. Leaving the city rudderless once more.
As if all that wasn't enough, a few months later news broke that a band of hill giants was marching towards the city, tempted by the crisis to loot and pillage as they pleased. Failing to organise a proper defense, the city seemed doomed. However it was at the darkest hour that a stranger appeared in the city. This man rallied the defenders and repelled the hill giant's assault.
Spurred by gratefulness for the military aid and the subsequent advice on restoring social order -as well as no small amount of desperation on the city's part- the stranger was offered the barony. However the man refused the title, but ultimately agreed to stay to defend and advice the city. He has remained ever since, with few to none even knowing his name. Instead, the people of Darkhallow came to call him The Uncrowned King, certain in their conviction that he is destined to finally unify the Uncrowned Lands once more.
