Uncrowned Lands
The collective name of the area enclosed between The Screaming Strait and the Valorous Mountains. Once unified as the Azul kingdom under Good King Omund, it is now politically divided into several territories.
History
During the Age of Arcanum the entire region was unified as the Azul Kingdom. It was ruled by a human under the name Good King Omund. Few records of his reign survived, but it is known that he was widely admired by his contemporaries. By far his most famous achievement today was recruiting several clans of dragonborn into forming the Dragon Phalanx. An army of such skill and discipline that legends of it have persisted to this day. Good King Omund's assassination marked the end of the Age of Arcanum and the start of the Age of Conquest. In the wake of his death, Azul kingdom was the first of the old nations to fall. It was conquered by a group of seven dark lords, agents of the Usurper. From then on, Azul was little more than a staging ground for the Usurper's invasion. Divided into seven pieces under the dark lords, the land and people existed to fuel the unending war machine. Only once the Chosen of the gods arrived was the land liberated, but even then it couldn't be reunited. With Omund's line ended and with so many years living in separation, no obvious inheritor could be found. Before long, five barons emerged that each ruled their own region. Although in the centuries since there have been schemes, alliances and wars that shifted the borders on the map, the land remains without a unified ruler to this day.Geography
The Uncrowned Lands as a whole stretches over a wide berth of land. Natural barriers make the region fairly isolated, which has historically worked in its military defense.
- In the east there is Purevalley, a rich valley of rivers and farmland. Most of the lands' population lives here.
- East of Purevalley is the Ignim mountain range, named for its red coloration.
- Up north-west lies the Violet Plateau, an elevated landmass where flowers and other small plants thrive, but where few forests or intense farming can endure. Only nomadic tribes make their home here.
- Central in the region are the Four Brothers, a large and mostly uninhabited area of roiling hills, with four particularly big hills giving the region its name.
- North-east lies one of the largest forests in Medina, the Great Wode of Ym Alar. The forest is saturated with magic and is home to terrible monsters. Few dare venture deeper than a few hundred meters, and fewer still come out again.
- To the east lie the Hool Marshes, the natural border with Vrox. The marshes are foul and pestilent, and no travel should be done there without abundant preparation. In the year 133AH a Vroxian general lost half his army attempting to invade the Uncrowned Lands through the treacherous marshes, and no army has attempted to cross since.
