Ixaanrian

Íxáanrìan (Vjin: /í‼áanrìan/) is one of the largest and most historically significant cities on Íinzràí. It is particularly known for its scenic coastal cliffs and historic architecture, both legally protected.

Geography

Íxáanrìan is located on a bay surrounded by high cliffs and containing numerous islands of various sizes, rocky spires and arches. There is some disagreement on the exact number of islands, however all commonly cited sources put the number at over 100.   The bay is located at the edge of a high plateau rising approximately 200m above the lowest tide level. Tides in Íxáanrìan bay are amongst the highest on Íinzràí, varying just below 100m between the lowest and the highest water level.   Many of the narrower spires and arches are structurally weak, and have been internally reinforced to prevent collapse while preserving their appearance.

Architecture

While most of the newer parts of the city located on the plateau are not too dissimilar from major cities on other planets, the old city is mostly built into the cliff faces and also includes several buildings which are part of bridges. The oldest buildings are simply carved into the cliff faces, while later the architecture shifted more towards building on ledges or attaching buildings to the cliff wall.   As the old city is legally protected from externally visible alteration as a historical preservation site, many buildings have been internally reinforced and some rendered inacessible.   Many bridges have been built between islands, as well as ropeways for public transport. While some are not open for public use anymore, a significant portion still form the core of the transportation network of the old city.

Demographics

The overall population of the city is roughly 80% Griavin, which represents the lowest native population among cities on Íinzràí. The famous scenery of the bay and relatively good accessibility due to tourism efforts are generally credited for its popularity with non-griavin. However, there is still some criticism for the limited accessibility of some parts of the old city without flight.
