Originally First Men Kings and then loyal vassals of House Stark for centuries, the Slates have long been a valuable producer of fruits and vegetables within the Northwest. The Blazewater Fields are one of the more fertile regions of the already fertile Rills, and House Slate has mastered the cultivation of these lands.
When House Ryswell returned from Essos House Slate was assigned to them as a vassal, and as such they were forced to host the large armies of Edward Ryswell for several months leading up to the rebellion carried out by his daughter. The people of Blackpool were constantly mistreated by the 'soldiers' who were still more mercenary at heart, and several incidents at the peak of this tension involving Lord Slate's own family were ignored by Ræva who seemed to only encourage the behavior of her men.
Because of these transgressions, when Maria Mormont landed the Ironwood Fleet in the port of Blackpool during Ræva's Rebellion, they were welcomed with open arms and Lord Slate quickly pledged fealty to Maria. She agreed to return their lands after the war, and House Slate enthusiastically joined the battles that would occur in the Rills going forward. Now House Slate stands as one of the most wealthy vassals serving under House Mormont, and their rich fields now feed the sailors and soldiers of the Ironwood Fleet.
