Julian Bathazaar

Magus Julian Fenris Bathazaar

"Beyond these walls lay a world were boundaries are meant to be pushed, to explore and understand the threads that bind our realty together. Here is where knowledge and studying meet Wisdom and practice, If you desire to truly learn and to continue on in the face of adversity, to become better then there will always be a place for you here. For your struggles were once my struggles." - Engraved message at the entrance to Bathazaar's Sanctum.

Personal history

Julian was hatched to Elkec and Lirek Bathazaar, he was given a more human like first name in honor of a deceased family friend who served with Elkec in the Bralor civil war (1816 AGF - 1822 AGF). As Julian grew he would learned the art of trading goods, like his father, when he was old enough he would accompany his father on caravans to Druebar. After several trips Julian was allowed more freedom to wander and to perform his own trades, one day he encountered an exceptionally gifted wizard, who traded a wizards apprentice's book to Julian. Julian began to learn the arcane arts, his family was reluctant to foster this learning as he was already older then when most began their studies. This didn't deter Julian as he worked harder to acquire more books, over the years he learned a few of the easier cantrips, but he wanted to expand his knowledge and attempted more powerful arcane arts. Unfortunately this didn't go so well and Julian ended up setting fire inside his room and it threatened to consume the surrounding houses. This incident upset the local community and Elkec Bathazaar realized Julian couldn't stay, while Elkec wasn't a dragonborn of great means, he did know one human who was: Arledge Doresk. Elkec served under Arledge during the Bralorian Civil war and distinguished himself many times, which allowed for house Doresk to rise to a position of influence within the Southbrook province. Elkec was able to secure a place at the mage's academy in Highsummit for Julian, so on the 5th day of Rorso, 1850 AGF, Julian left his home not knowing if he'd ever return.

Julian realized he was not on the same level as others his age, and found his reach exceeded his grasp, he faced many setbacks and while the faculty appreciated his enthusiasm they also found him frustrating with his desire to try magic he wasn't ready for. Questions started to circulate if Julian had the right mindset to learn the arcane, until one day the academy was visited by Marshall Dorene Hildegard, her mission was to find potential candidates to become war mages. Julian wasn't aware of her visit and the faculty sent him on various menial tasks to keep him occupied (not wanting his brash personality to cast a shadow on the academy's name). Dorene observed all the students but found most of them lacking as wizardry and warfighting had two very different mentalities. As she was leaving strong winds blew several doors open and shattered some windows, the faculty were so busy seeing to Dorene that they hadn't been keeping an eye on Julian who took the time to practice on his own. Dorene saw everything she wanted in a war mage in Julian, the faculty tried to dissuade her but weren't successful. Julian didn't need any convincing when he found out everything war mage training entailed, he'd not only be allowed but encouraged to push himself. He was taken to a training camp to hone his abilities, and would occasionally return to the academy to further refine certain areas.

In 1865 AGF the mage academy approached the royal council with a proposition, a joint expedition beyond the Fortress of Barthmont. The mages academy originally just wanted a detachment of soldiers for protection, the royal council saw an opportunity to potentially expand the borders, they offered the academy the opportunity to caravan with a small vanguard of soldiers. The academy was hesitant because there was potential for two competing objectives for this expedition. To help sooth their worries the council appointed Julian Bathazaar to lead, with a wizard in charge of the expedition (especially one eager to expand the knowledge of magic), the academy agreed. The expedition left Barthmont and proceeded north and founded the settlement of Pearl Keep, this early accomplishment grew support for Julian's expedition and he then turned his sights east, into the Wildlands. Julian hacked his way through the forests and the monsters he found, eventually found himself before a large area of grasslands and a dense jungle to the south. The expedition created a fortified basecamp (eventually growing into present day Aramore) and proceeded to explore the jungles (becoming known as the Misty Gardens). Realizing the jungle had much to offer in terms of magical ingredients, Julian established another camp that would later become Strongfare (Some negotiating with Druebar was had). The expedition moved on and eventually stopped at the current eastern borders of Eastbrook, the discoveries made and the land that had been claimed was a major boon to Bralor. Julian returned to Highsummit in 1875 AGF and continued his service to the country for the next 20 years, establishing a standardized training for war mages and protecting the country from several potentially detrimental schemes.

After his retirement Julian went back to Eastbrook, he considered his time there to have the most impact on his life, he built a estate in Strongfare and continued his magical studies, he started to be approached by people wishing to learn from him.  He found new purpose in teaching and adapting theory into practicality and started to infuse mechanical contraptions with magic, he started to expand his estate to accommodate a workshop and several lecture halls as more students sought him out. Julian imagination had no limits and one of his crowning achievements would be the opening of the Strongfare clocktower, a magnificent marvel of mechanical, magical, and artistic creations. It is also rumored for every project Julian had publicly revealed, he would have several more he kept secret, though no one could say where such things were kept if they did exist. Julian died at during the Festival of Creation of 1951 AGF, living an exceptionally long life and given the time of his death many thought it was due to the blessings of the Dragons.

Julian left behind a legacy that could fill many lifetimes, expanding the borders of Bralor would of been an achievement anyone would be proud of. Some would say his career as a mentor after he retired had a greater impact, as it directly led to the founding of Bathazaar's Sanctum in Strongfare, Julian always tried to ensure anyone with the desire to learn had a place as one of his students.
