Witch Hunters

Following The Incursion and the Mending that ended this strife, many soon witch hunters rose up in the republic of Dezaria, whether State sanction or noted. They would track down and "vanquish" individuals who may possess magic, which was and still is considered by the authorities as a risk to the State and its citizens. Later, the Republic formalised contracts of service for such individuals and they became a type of office bearer. However the Mending closed the font of magic and prevalency dropped dramatically, and so Witch Hunters dwindled in the decades after. But they still remain to this day due to the occasional alleged witch, warlock or person considered tainted by magic. Whether such individuals held any power is another question, yet they were dealt with in a horrible manner, usually burnt on a pyre.   Witch Hunters might work in isolation, form an entourage or work in conjunction with The Soulguard, should their goals align.   The most known witch hunter currently in Dezaria is the human, Kaziya Burnstar. Although a charismatic woman, some speak of her ruthlessness and capacity to cross any line to reach her goals. She is accompanied by Chuma, a glowering Goliath. She is also accompanied by a young human cleric, Andrej and strange diminutive winged creature.   There have been attempts by the Holy Order of Helm to bring Witch Hunters under their own control as they believe such work falls under their religious directive, yet Grand Marshalls of the past have opposed and declined such requests, mostly in fear of giving too much power to the Order.   The Kingdom of Fiumri also have their own formal arm of Witch Hunters, which operate in a similiar fashion. Meanwhile, the frequency of magic users outside of these nations such as Valoris, Arboria or Zemay has not been publically recorded and they have no sanctioned Witch Hunters.
