This insect appears when one’s death is near this doesn’t guarantee death but does predict the possibility of it happening.
They do this to feed on the life force leaving the dying person.
They also are found around mages who don’t conceal their own arcane souls, mages wear special repellents to prevent them from following them.
The shells of these creatures appear in a wide range of tones, a result of them coating themselves in metal deposits to reinforce the exterior of their shell.
This has lead to regional differences in tones based on the natural deposits found in their environment.
They tend to die young at about 4 to 6cm in length, but for those that reach adulthood they range from 6 to 8, excluding the legs which vary greatly.
Basic Information
The Ruhnonsol features one large shell of 4 - 8 cm depending on age.
It has 5 sets of legs that stretch out.
It has a set of wings that vary in size.
they follow a reproductive process that begins with mating, where specific behaviours and rituals are often involved.
After mating, the female Ruhnonsol lays eggs in a chosen environment, such as soil, and dung, but typically decaying matter as to allow the young to feed off the remnants of the souls.
Upon hatching, its larvae, known as grubs, undergo a voracious feeding stage before entering the pupal stage. Metamorphosis during pupation transforms the larva into an adult beetle, completing the reproductive cycle.
Its primary source of food is the souls of dying creatures, however it also does feed on decaying matter.
Additional Information
it has a set of eyes in the front giving it some vision, although these eyes are rather weak.
Its main vision comes from its 3 sets of eye markings on its back, while they don't move scholars have determined they allow the Ruhnonsol to peer between the membranes of the world to see souls.
This vision often referred to as "Ruh Reeh" meaning "Soul Sight" in
Donsel is believed to see the future.
The Ruhnonsol beetle exhibits a remarkable adaptation in its oxygen-absorption mechanism. In addition to extracting oxygen through its spiracles and tracheae, the beetle has evolved a specialized ability to absorb excess souls through the same process. Souls, in this context, refer to a metaphysical essence or energy that leaks from people near death. The beetle's unique physiology allows it to draw in and assimilate surplus soul energy without causing harm to the source.
The concept behind the Ruhnonsol is fantastic. An insect that is a harbinger of death is so creepy and fascinating. Plus, I was a weird bug kid growing up, so this absolutely sings to me. Original artwork is also something I really appreciate seeing. It really goes a long way for me personally. Great article!
Yaaay for weird bug kid!
