Born as an orphan he had no surname or home to speak of. This led him to train hard eventually becoming accepted into the ranks of the sages in the temple of Vloech.
He had barely enough skill to hold his position as a worshipper of the arcane. He eventually had a breakthrough in skill after he was betrayed by his at the time lover, Gouiete Sunder, this caused him to rip out his own heart so love may never betray him again. This gave him the title Laihlag, which eventually became his surname. This gave him immense strength leading him to become the next vessel for divine Vloech.
He ruled as the god for about 40 years before his heart was found and resurrected and turned into a whistle, with a connection spiritually forced out most of the divine energy and his ability to love returned. He was no longer fit to be a vessel and returned back to being a part of the priests. He became a teacher, and with the lingering divine energy inside him, he proved to be one of the most effective sages giving him the right to burial as a draugr.
But other tales speech of Xivagh still searching for his love in the afterlife, with some saying he impregnated one of his students starting the Laihlag lineage.
