Ectoplasm

The Materia of Ghosts

General

Some phantoms are capable of surviving within the confines of Mésvéstell for unusually large periods of time without deteriorating or being burned into physical forms. How come this be so?
The answer is this; something causes them to evolve and this changes their nature to some degree. Their incorporeal forms secrete a supernatural substance that gives them tangibility and mass.
— Codex Chronicler.

Unique Substance

Scholars have given this substance the name of Ectoplasm, and it appears to be unique in nature. It shares similarities with both Aether and Magic, but cannot be manipulated by either Witches or Nekrons.
Ordinary weapons by either steel, stone, wood, or crystal have no effect on it and phases right through it as if it was mist, with weapons made from Silfgrim Steel having the greatest effect on it.
— Codex Chronicler.

Properties

There appear to be some slight differences between certain Ghosts and their Ectoplasm; some Ectoplasm is acidic in nature and eats through most materials, be it inorganic or organic. Others freeze what they come into contact, or heat them up to white glowing temperatures.
Ectoplasm is a substance that appears to be — in its natural or common state — similar to that of slime or sticky goo. It ranges in colors from pale blue to stark purple. Turquoise and emerald green are also common.
— Codex Chronicler.

Reactions to Ether

It reacts differently towards Magic and Aether. Towards magic, it appears to have much more resilient effects. It has a much greater chance of momentarily adopting the magical effect — such as Medeis Ignis — and making the Ghost appear more similar to a fiery elemental. Towards Aether, it is much more at risk.
As mentioned previously, Silfgrim Steel is an excellent material to use against them, as it burns their physical form and may annihilate them completely, sending them back to Eärann. The same goes for Necrotic Lightning.
— Codex Chronicler.

Shaping Ectoplasm

Ectoplasm can be shaped into various forms by the Ghosts. Either apparel or tools, be their civilian or militaristic in nature. Such as coats or dresses, or armors or swords or similar weapons. It has been documented a handful of times, that Ghosts even can form Ectoplasm into bows and arrows, and thus being capable of long-distance attacks.
Ectoplasm formed into armor has actually shown some resistant capabilities towards Silfgrim Steel, but only slightly so. As for weapons, some of those Ghost constructs are able to cause considerable damage against organic and inorganic matter; especially the acidic types.
— Codex Chronicler.

Deteriorating

Ectoplasm cannot sustain Ghosts for eternity, however, as the quality of it will deteriorate with time, albite slowly. It is suspected that the Väes Frequencies insistent pull on the substance is what weakens it. Mésvéstell does not like visitors from Eärann, unless they are changed considerably, like the Raw Veasen. This is just an assumption though.
As time passes by, the Ectoplasm losses its protective capabilities, and when the threshold is reached, the Ghost will fade back to Eärann. Nothing can be done to reverse this effect. This is the same for tools of their, especially swords or armors.
— Codex Chronicler.
