Ghosts

The Afterimage of Goëte

Evolved Phantoms

Ghosts are a curious sort of creatures that exist in some form of limbo between the physical and the metaphysical. They are rare and most are taken down by wandering Goëte who happens upon them. This has made them more legends than reality to most people. Scholars of the Aethereal circles are aware of their nature though and some of them actively seek them out in an attempt to understand their nature better.

Protective Ectoplasm

The reason for their existence is Ectoplasm, which they have become able to secrete. Its protects them from the burning sun rays and hinders them from turning into Raw Veasen.
What there is that is so special about them, that have made them evolve from Phantoms to Ghosts, is poorly understood. It may be accidental and random, or it may have something to do with the alignment of their Ethereal Chakras.

The “Alive” Ghosts

Some Ghosts appears to be more intelligent and “alive” than others. They are aware of the situation they are in and are capable of communication and speech. These are the rarest of their kind and also believed to be the most long-lived. Suspicions about them being former Norns have been raised but they give no clarity over such questions.
Some argue that they have as much of a chance as being either Ilyons or Nekrons. As long as no concrete answers are given, everything is up in the air.

Age of Ghosts

How long Ghosts exist before they fade away to Eärann is not know and appear to differ widely between specimens. Some only last a year or two, while others last for decades, if not centuries. There have been stories told about Ghosts who have reached ages of several millennia, though these are seen with incredulous scrutiny.

Appearance of Ghosts

Most Ghosts appear similar to how they perceive themselves, with more distinct details than Phantoms usually have. This includes their possible apparel and tools they cared very much for in their former lives. It may very well be possible for those who knew the Ghost in life, to recognize its current form.
Other Ghosts, however, look more like corpses than anything else. Humanoid, but not human in any sense of the word. They are all usually surrounded by a pale purple aura that can be very difficult to notice, especially if one is not Goëte.
Their forms are also covered in thin and nigh-invisible Soul Sigils that are silver-gleaming and intricate.

Capabilities of Ghosts

Ghosts are able to phase through solid matter, excluding Gildenstone and Silfgrim Steel. They are also said to be able to suck out the life-force of the living, at least, according to some cultures; this will in turn make their victim depressed and may make them take their own life.
They can also connect with the living in a similar fashion to Fylgior, but it appears to be easiest with living relatives, the closer the blood connection, the better. Even more so if the soul is scarred. In an extension of this, they may also only make themselves visible to some, while remaining invisible to others. Although, they are forever visible to Norns and have a difficult time to do so against Ilyons and Nekrons. The same goes for buildings and objects. Only when you walk near, inside, or touch them, will you notice the Ghosts.

Old Forms of Ghosts

Some Scholars have divided Ghosts into various types. Especially how the old deviate from the young, due to their deteriorated nature and age. Their nature of what they were when they lived is also believed to play a role as well. Areas afflicted by either Aether or Magic is said too to have an effect on their alternate forms as well.

Irrbloss

Irrbloss are believed to be the form ancient Ghosts take that have been in magically active areas, and whose ectoplasm has adopted to its energy structure to a greater degree than others. They are not as aware as some Ghosts and are more whimsical in nature; more instinctive.
Their appearance has also diminished and instead of a humanoid form, they usually take the shape of a solidified ball of ectoplasm that floats through the air, similar to some degree to Floating Lights.
