The Northern Tundra

Separating the lands of Rhovanion from the frozen wastes of the Forodwaith, the Ered Mithrin (Grey Mountains) and their foothills look ever downwards upon the forest below. An imposing sight indeed, these lands were once the heart of a mighty Dwarven kingdom that spread underground for miles upon miles, from the Greydelve fortress in the north, passing under the ancient heights of Gundabad, through the halls of Khazad-Dum all the way to the very peak of Methedras. But like much of the splender of the Dwarves of old, little remains of that once proud kingdom, all but destroyed in the carnage of battle. First by the War of the Dwarves and Dragons, which decimated much of the Dwarves northern kingdom for nearly 20 years, then vandalised during the savage War of the Dwarves and Orcs.   A long degraded path runs from the Gundabad Peaks in the west, cutting through the seemingly endless nothingness to the Withered Heath, where the Mountains split into two forks before disappearing into the expanse of the Northern Wastes. While largely sheltered by the Mountains the savage weather that creeps down from the north can still be easily felt here, with only endless mountains on one side and the vast expanse of Mirkwood's northern border on the other these lands are tiresome to traverse, with what little shelter and settelments there once was having been destroyed by Dragon fire long ago.   Yet this is still the preferred route to and from the Dale-lands for those who wish not to traverse the depths of the great forest. Many merchants, particularly those of the dwarves chose to take this long road instead, they do so with care and armed escort for the foothills of the mountains are home to many orcs and goblins that fled here after the battle of Five Armies.
