A lust for gold slowly takes possession of Thrain. He resolves to return to Erebor and convinces Balin and Dwalin and a few others to leave the Blue Mountains with him. Their wanderings bring them again beyond the Misty Mountains, until on a dark night Thrain disappears in Mirkwood.
